Chapter 5 - THE SEAM OF TRUTHThe music cut off mid-measure. The sudden silence in the Hudson Glass Pavilion was absolute, heavy enough to choke on.

Vanessa froze at the end of the runway, her smile locking into a grotesque, plastic grimace. She turned her head slightly, looking back toward the backstage entrance where Ethan was now stumbling out from behind the velvet curtains, pale as a ghost.

"Get her off the stage!" Ethan screamed, his voice cracking, echoing through the empty auditorium. "Security! Get that woman out of here right now!"

Two security guards lunged down the side aisle toward Claire. But before they could lay a hand on her, Marcus Vance stood up from his front-row seat, raising his hand with an authoritative snap.

"Touch her," Vance’s deep, resonant voice cut through the silence, "and my firm pulls every dollar of investment from this venue, this brand, and every subsidiary you own, Mr. Bennett."

The guards stopped dead in their tracks.

Ethan stared at Vance in horror. "Marcus, don't listen to her! She’s mentally unstable! She’s a disgruntled contractor trying to sabotage a multi-million-dollar launch!"

Vance didn't look at Ethan. His eyes remained fixed on Claire, then shifted slowly to the woman standing under the blinding white lights.

"Miss Bennett," Vance said calmly, adjusting his cufflinks. "You interrupted a twelve-million-dollar showcase. You better have a very good reason."

Claire didn't flinch. She opened her leather portfolio, pulled out a heavy steel object—a vintage industrial seam ripper with a worn wooden handle—and held it up for the entire room to see.

"I do," Claire said clearly. "Because the dress Miss Hale is wearing isn't just an original design. It's an illegal counterfeit of a garment that hasn't been shown to the public in seven years."

A collective gasp rippled through the fashion critics and reporters in the audience. Camera lenses zoomed in so tightly on Claire’s face that every pore, every line of exhaustion, and every trace of absolute, unyielding resolve was broadcast live across three major streaming networks.

"That's a lie!" Vanessa cried out from the runway, her voice high and trembling. "I sketched this myself! I worked on it for months in Brooklyn!"

Claire smiled—a cold, humorless expression that made Vanessa step back instinctively, nearly tripping over her own heels in the heavy fabric.

"Did you, Vanessa?" Claire asked, walking slowly toward the base of the runway steps. "Then tell me about the pocket sewn into the inner lining."

Vanessa’s face lost every vestige of color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

"Let me describe it for the audience," Claire continued, her voice ringing clear and steady through the speakers. "Inside the left side seam of the Cathedral bodice, hidden beneath three layers of black silk chiffon and hand-stitched with blue embroidery thread, there is a small, sealed pocket. Inside that pocket is a medical ID bracelet made of plastic, bearing the name Evelyn Bennett, dated October 14, 2018—the day my mother passed away in Room 412 of Mercy General Hospital."

The silence in the pavilion became suffocating.

"Ethan watched me sew that bracelet into the first prototype seven years ago," Claire said, turning her head slowly to look directly at her husband, who stood frozen in the aisle like a deer caught in high beams. "He told me it was a beautiful tribute. He just forgot that when you steal a design down to its physical core, you steal the ghosts stitched into the seams as well."
