Chapter 2 - The Wolf in White Coils

When the frosted glass doors of the examination room swung open, Dr. Marcus Kent walked in with the swagger of a man who owned the world.
He was wearing his crisp white lab coat, unbuttoned at the collar to reveal a designer shirt underneath. His hair was meticulously styled, and his smile—the very smile he flashed on local morning talk shows while discussing groundbreaking pediatric surgeries—was plastered across his face.
"Ah, my favorite mother-in-law," Marcus boomed, his voice dripping with forced, oily charm. He didn't even look at Cora first; instead, his eyes scanned my designer suit, calculating my net worth out of sheer habit. "Eleanor. What a pleasant surprise. I didn't realize you were accompanying Cora to her final checkup. Though, given her... delicate condition, perhaps it's for the best."
Cora shrank back against the examination table, her breath hitching. Every muscle in her body went rigid, a clear, desperate reflex of pure trauma.
I didn't blink. I kept my face smooth, masking the raging volcano of pure fury threatening to burn my veins from the inside out.
"I wanted to make sure my grandchild's final weeks are monitored by the best," I replied, my voice dangerously steady. I stepped deliberately between Marcus and Cora, shielding my daughter from his predatory gaze. "After all, a C-scheduled delivery with the hospital director himself is quite a high-profile event. Wouldn't want anything... unexpected to happen, would we, Marcus?"
Marcus chuckled, a smooth, self-satisfied sound that made my stomach churn. He tossed his stethoscope onto the counter with a casual clatter.
"Oh, Eleanor, you worry too much. Saint Jude has the finest surgical suites in the state. Under my scalpel, complications are statistically impossible," Marcus said, stepping closer, towering over Cora with a subtle, menacing tilt of his head. He reached out to stroke Cora’s cheek—a sickening display of public affection.
Cora closed her eyes, trembling violently.
I caught Marcus's wrist mid-air.
My grip was deceptively firm. My fingers clamped around his forearm with a pressure that caused the smile on his face to falter for a fraction of a second. He tried to pull away, but my fingers held fast, locked like a steel trap.
"Your hands are busy enough saving lives, Marcus," I said, looking straight into his cold, calculating eyes. "Let's keep them to yourself while we wait for the ultrasound technician, shall we?"
Marcus forced a tight, brittle laugh, yanking his arm back with a sharp jerk. He adjusted his cuff, glaring down at me with a sudden, venomous flash of irritation that he quickly masked behind professional cordiality.
"Right. Well. The technician will be here shortly to prep her," Marcus muttered, his tone dropping a full octave. He leaned in close to my ear, his voice a low, venomous hiss meant only for me. "You think you can play protector, Eleanor? Remember where you are. In this hospital, I am God. If Cora opens her mouth about anything... she pays the ultimate price."
He turned on his heel, his white coat snapping behind him like the cape of a villain, and walked out, slamming the heavy door shut.
As the lock clicked, Cora broke down completely, sobbing quietly into her hands.
"Mom... he's going to destroy us," she wept.

I gently pulled her hands away from her face, looking deep into her red, swollen eyes.
"Cora, listen to me very carefully," I said, wiping a tear from her cheek with absolute, unwavering resolve. "Your husband thinks he is a god. But today, we are going to teach him what happens when mortals try to play with lightning."
