Chapter 5 - Stripping the White Coat

The collapse of Marcus Kent’s life didn't take days. It took hours.

By 2:00 PM, an emergency meeting of the Saint Jude Board of Directors had been hastily called in the executive boardroom on the top floor. The long mahogany table, usually gleaming and pristine, was surrounded by anxious board members sweating through their tailored suits.

At the head of the table sat Arthur, my lead counsel, flanked by two armed security guards in crisp black suits.

And sitting right beside Arthur, holding the master deed of the entire hospital complex, was me.

The heavy glass doors swung open, and Marcus rushed into the boardroom, completely unhinged. His hair was disheveled, his white coat stained with coffee he had spilled in his panic, and his eyes bloodshot.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Marcus shouted, slamming both palms onto the mahogany table. He looked around the room, expecting his usual chorus of nodding sycophants. Instead, every single board member averted their eyes, staring intently at their leather-bound portfolios. "Are you all insane?! They just locked me out of my office! The billing department says my signature is invalid! I am the Chief of Surgery!"

"Not anymore, Dr. Kent," Arthur said smoothly, not even bothering to look up from the financial folios. He slid a thick stack of legal documents across the table toward Marcus.

Marcus snatched the papers up, his eyes darting frantically across the legal jargon.

"Revocation of medical credentials... Suspension of administrative privileges... Termination of employment for gross misconduct, financial malfeasance, and ethical violations..." Marcus read aloud, his voice cracking into a desperate squeak. He looked up, his face twisted in rage. "This is illegal! I demand to speak to the owner of Vanguard Holdings! Who authorized this?!"

I slowly leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table, and interlocked my fingers.

"I did, Marcus."

The room went dead silent. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents whispering against the glass walls.

Marcus slowly turned his head toward me, his jaw slackening. For the first time since I had met him, all the arrogance, all the polished charm, and all the cruel power completely evaporated from his face, leaving behind the pathetic, shivering shell of a coward.

"You..." Marcus whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the words. "You own Vanguard?"

"Every single share," I replied calmly. "Every building, every lab, every machine, and every scalpel you've ever held in this facility. You thought your white coat made you a god, Marcus. But you forgot a very fundamental rule of the corporate world: never bite the hand that feeds the roof over your head."

"You can't do this!" Marcus screamed, lunging forward toward the table, desperate to reach me.

Before he could take a second step, the two armed security guards stepped in, pinning his arms behind his back with practiced, crushing efficiency and forcing him down onto the table.

"Let me go! Do you know who I am?!" Marcus shrieked, thrashing uselessly against their grip.

"Oh, we know exactly who you are, Marcus," Arthur said, closing his leather folder with a sharp snap. "And the state medical board is already reviewing your license. But before the police arrive to escort you off the premises for domestic abuse, extortion, and medical intimidation... there is one final formality."
