Chapter 6 - The Tiger’s Trap

The police arrived precisely at 3:15 PM, escorted by Arthur straight into the executive boardroom.
Two officers in dark tactical uniforms approached the table where Marcus was still being held by security. His lab coat was completely torn at the shoulder, his pride shredded into microscopic pieces, and his face red with a mixture of rage and terror.
"Dr. Marcus Kent?" the lead officer asked, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for domestic violence, aggravated assault, extortion, and criminal intimidation of a protected witness."
"This is a setup! My mother-in-law is framing me! I demand my lawyer!" Marcus screamed as the handcuffs snapped around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.
As they dragged him out of the boardroom, kicking and cursing like a cornered animal, I didn't even flinch. I watched him go with the cold, detached satisfaction of an apex predator watching a pest get swept off the floor.
"Clear him out of the building," I instructed Arthur without turning my head. "Revoke his medical malpractice insurance, ensure his banking records are permanently flagged for federal audit, and make sure his name is scrubbed from every plaque, plaque-holder, and medical journal associated with Saint Jude by nightfall."
"It will be done, Madam Vance," Arthur nodded respectfully.
I stood up, buttoned my blazer, and walked out of the boardroom toward the private elevator.
It was time to check on my daughter.
When I opened the door to the VIP recovery suite, Cora was sitting up in the hospital bed. The medical staff had already transferred her to a quiet, sunlit room overlooking the city skyline. She was holding a warm cup of herbal tea, her eyes wide and fixed on the wall-mounted television screen.
On the local news channel, a breaking news banner flashed in bright red letters: BREAKING: SAINT JUDE HOSPITAL DIRECTOR ARRESTED AMID MASSIVE CORRUPTION AND DOMESTIC ABUSE SCANDAL.
Footage of Marcus being led out of the hospital in handcuffs, his face blurred by privacy filters, broadcast across the screen.
Cora slowly turned her head as I walked in. The raw, suffocating terror that had hollowed out her eyes just hours ago was finally gone, replaced by a profound, trembling wave of relief. Tears spilled silently down her cheeks, but this time, they weren't tears of fear.
She set her tea down on the bedside table and reached her arms out toward me.
I didn't hesitate. I walked over, wrapped my arms tightly around my daughter, and held her close—protecting her the way I should have been able to all along.

"He's gone, sweetheart," I whispered into her hair, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "He can never hurt you or your baby ever again."
Cora buried her face in my shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of pure, unadulterated freedom. "Thank you, Mom... you actually destroyed him."
