Chapter 4 - The First Domino Falls

Ten minutes later, the tranquility of the VIP wing was shattered by a muffled, frantic shout echoing from the executive administrative offices down the hall.
“What do you mean, declined?!”
Marcus Kent’s voice boomed through the thin drywall, laced with absolute, unadulterated panic.
Cora flinched, pulling the hospital gown tighter around her shoulders. "That's... that's Marcus."
"Stay here," I instructed calmly, smoothing down the front of my blazer. "Let's go see how the director handles a little financial gravity."
I stepped out into the hallway just as Marcus burst through the heavy mahogany doors of his private office. His white lab coat was half-off his shoulder, his tie loosened frantically, and his face drained of all color. He was pressing his smartphone violently against his ear, his hands shaking so badly he could barely swipe the screen.
"Listen to me, I am the Chief of Surgery! My corporate card for the medical conference just got rejected at the front desk!" Marcus roared into the phone, his voice echoing off the marble floors. "Fix it right now, or I'll have your entire billing department fired before lunch!"
A group of junior residents walking past stopped dead in their tracks, staring in shock at the usually composed, arrogant hospital director losing his mind in public.
I strolled slowly down the corridor, my heels clicking rhythmically against the floor.
Marcus slammed his phone against his palm, spinning around angrily—and slammed right into my path. He stopped short, chest heaving, sweat beading across his forehead.
"Eleanor," he spat, his eyes wild with stress. "Get out of my way. I have an administrative emergency."
"An emergency, Marcus?" I asked, tilting my head with polite, feigned curiosity. "Odd. For a man who controls an entire hospital, you look remarkably out of control. Did something happen to your funds?"
Marcus glared at me, his chest rising and falling rapidly. He leaned in, lowering his voice to a desperate, furious whisper. "What did you do? You were acting strange in that exam room. Did you pull some old-money strings with the board? You think you can embarrass me?"
I didn't answer right away. I let the silence stretch between us, a heavy, suffocating weight that made his breathing grow even more ragged.
"Marcus," I said softly, my voice carrying a quiet, lethal authority that cut straight through his panic. "A man who beats pregnant women in the privacy of his home is a coward. A man who uses his medical license to threaten the life of his own child is a monster. And a monster without money... is just a target."
Marcus stared at me, his eyes widening in sudden, absolute horror as the pieces began to click together in his frantic mind.
"You..." he whispered, his voice trembling. "You're... Vanguard."
"Bingo," I smiled coldly.
Before he could draw another breath to scream or threaten me, his phone rang again. A notification banner lit up his screen. Even from a distance, I could see the bold red text spanning across his display:

URGENT: ALL ASSETS FROZEN. ACCOUNTS ZEROED. FORECLOSURE PROCEEDINGS INITIATED.
Marcus let out a guttural sound of pure disbelief, dropping his phone onto the marble floor, where the screen shattered into a spiderweb of glass.
