Chapter 5 - Desperate MeasuresOver the next seventy-two hours, Michael's life collapsed like a house of cards in a hurricane.

With his corporate accounts frozen and his executive power stripped away, he tried to access his personal funds—only to discover that Susan Vance had secured an emergency court order freezing all marital assets pending our divorce proceedings. The grand Lake Forest mansion was placed under protective lock; the locks were changed, and a private security team was stationed at the gates.
Michael and Amber were forced to move into a modest hotel on the outskirts of the city. The multi-million dollar penthouse in Miami was seized by federal investigators, who had officially opened a formal inquiry into Grant Holdings' off-shore transfers based on the evidence Arthur Vance had provided.
Driven to absolute madness, Michael tried every dirty trick in the book. He called reporters, claiming I was an abusive, mentally deteriorating spouse who had staged a corporate coup. But Susan countered every leak with cold, hard bank statements, medical records showing he had abandoned me while I was in critical condition, and corporate audit reports that laid bare his financial crimes. The media turned on him instantly. The public framed him as the ultimate villain: a greedy, unfaithful coward who had abandoned his sick wife of nearly fifty years for a gold-digger, only to get utterly outplayed.
On a rainy Tuesday evening, six days before our scheduled appearance in divorce court, I was sitting in my library at home, sipping hot tea, when my housekeeper informed me that Michael was at the front gate.
"He's alone, ma'am," she said quietly. "He looks... terrible. He’s begging to see you."
I looked down at my cup of tea, then at the crackling fire in the hearth. "Let him in, Martha. But tell security to stay in the hallway."
A few minutes later, Michael entered the library.

The change in his appearance was shocking. The impeccably tailored suit was gone, replaced by a rumpled jacket and unpressed trousers. His eyes were bloodshot, dark circles hollowed beneath them, and his hair was unkempt. The arrogant, triumphant man who had stood at the foot of my hospital bed just two weeks ago had completely vanished.
"Evelyn," he rasped, his voice trembling as he stepped into the warm glow of the firelight.
