Chapter 8 - The Queen’s GambitSix months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the rolling hills of Napa Valley.

I stood on the stone veranda of a breathtaking vineyard estate—a property I had purchased shortly after the finalization of the court proceedings. The air was rich with the scent of blooming jasmine and crushed grapes.

Grant Holdings had been completely restructured under my leadership. We had cleared out the corruption, restored the company's integrity, and launched a multi-million-dollar philanthropic foundation dedicated to supporting senior women recovering from illness and financial abuse.

Susan Vance walked out onto the veranda, holding two glasses of chilled white wine. She handed one to me with a warm smile.

"Any news on Michael?" I asked softly, taking a sip.

"The plea deal was finalized this morning," Susan replied. "He pleaded guilty to two counts of federal wire fraud. Because of his age and lack of prior criminal record, the judge sentenced him to seven years in a minimum-security federal facility. Amber Sanders was named an unindicted co-conspirators; she was forced to surrender all the jewelry, luxury cars, and property Michael had bought her, and she’s currently working as a paralegal in Texas just to pay off her legal debts."

I looked out over the sweeping rows of green vines stretching toward the horizon. There was no anger left in my heart. No bitterness. Only a deep, profound sense of peace.

Michael had thought he was ending my story when he walked out of my bedroom that cold afternoon. He thought he was leaving behind a broken, helpless old woman. He didn't realize that he was simply turning the page to my next chapter.

Betrayal is a dark, painful path, but it can also be a catalyst. It forces you to remember who you were before you sacrificed yourself for someone else's ambition.

I raised my glass toward the golden sky, feeling the warm sun on my face and the steady, strong beat of my heart.

I was Evelyn Grant. I was seventy-four years old. And my life was just beginning.
