Chapter 7 - Day of ReckoningThe morning of the final court hearing arrived under a heavy, grey sky. The courthouse was surrounded by news crews, photographers, and curious onlookers.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Michael sat at the defense table beside his lead attorney, looking gaunt and defeated. Amber Sanders was nowhere to be found; three days prior, when federal agents had frozen the last of her private accounts, she had packed her bags and abandoned Michael, fleeing the state in a desperate attempt to distance herself from his legal wreckage.

I sat at the petitioner's table, flanked by Susan and Arthur Vance. I was dressed in a pristine navy suit, calm, composed, and utterly resolute.

The judge, an imposing woman named Honorable Victoria Reyes, took her seat on the bench. She adjusted her glasses and looked down at the massive stack of documents resting before her—the forensic audit, the bank records, and the corporate charter.

"Mr. Grant," Judge Reyes began, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case of such egregious financial deceit and spousal abandonment. You attempted to systematically strip your wife of forty-eight years of her life's work, siphoning tens of millions of dollars into illegal offshore entities, all while she was recovering from major medical procedures."

Michael’s attorney stood up haltingly. "Your Honor, my client is prepared to offer a full surrender of—"

"Silence, counsel," Judge Reyes interjected sharply. "I am reading the final decree."

She picked up the heavy brass gavel, looking directly at Michael.

"Under the terms of the marital dissolution agreement and the enforcement of the 1978 Grant Holdings Founding Charter, the court hereby awards ninety-five percent of all liquid marital assets, real estate holdings, and physical property to Mrs. Evelyn Grant. Furthermore, all remaining voting shares of Grant Holdings currently held by Mr. Grant are stripped and transferred in full to Mrs. Grant."

Michael gasped, leaning forward and placing his head in his hands.

"Additionally," Judge Reyes continued, her tone darkening, "in light of the forensic evidence presented regarding the illegal wire transfers to Apex Horizons LLC, this court is immediately referring these files to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District for criminal prosecution on charges of wire fraud, tax evasion, and corporate embezzlement. Mr. Grant, you are to surrender your passport to the bailiff immediately."

The heavy wooden gavel struck the sound block, ringing out like a thunderclap.

It was over.
