Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW NETWORK

Eleanor’s face drained of every drop of color. The scotch glass slipped from her fingers and shattered on the hardwood floor, dark amber liquid pooling around her designer heels.
“You... you’re lying,” she stammered, stepping back, her confidence crumbling into sheer panic. “You wouldn't risk Sarah’s name!”
Before she could reach the desk drawer where I knew she kept a small handgun, the heavy oak doors of the study were kicked open with a deafening crash.
“POLICE! DON'T MOVE!”
Four armed officers surged into the room, guns drawn, led by Chief Miller himself. Behind them stood the State Assistant District Attorney, holding a secure audio receiver that was actively recording the feed.
“Eleanor Vance,” Chief Miller roared, stepping forward with handcuffs outstretched. “You are under arrest for the attempted murder of Maya Sterling, the cold-blooded murder of Sarah Sterling, extortion, and conspiracy!”
“Get your filthy hands off me!” Eleanor screamed, kicking violently as two officers pinned her against the edge of the mahogany desk. “Richard! You fool! You think you’ve won?! Julian will destroy you! He has everything! The offshore accounts, the clinic files—you’ll go down with me!”
I stood up slowly, stepping over the puddle of scotch and broken glass. I looked Eleanor dead in the eyes, inches from her hyperventilating face.
“Dr. Mercer isn't going to help you, Eleanor,” I said quietly. “Because while I was sitting in that hospital room holding my daughter's hand, my security team was already raiding his private clinic.”
Eleanor’s eyes went wide with sheer terror. “What?”
“Did you really think I made my billions by being oblivious?” I spat, my voice dripping with absolute scorn. “The moment Mrs. Gable called me about Maya, I had my chief security officer track your phone logs for the past six months. I know about the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. I know about the $10 million transfer you made to Mercer last Tuesday. And right now, federal agents are pulling Mercer out of his bed.”
“No... no, no!” Eleanor shrieked, her regal composure completely collapsing into hysterical sobbing as the officers slapped the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.
“Take her away,” Miller ordered disgustedly.
They dragged Eleanor down the grand staircase—the very staircase she had re-carpeted with expensive velvet using my money, the very staircase she had forbidden my child from walking on. Her screams of rage echoed off the high ceilings until the front doors slammed shut, echoing into the dark, rainy night.
I turned to the District Attorney. “Is it enough for maximum security?”
“Mr. Sterling,” the DA said gravely, holding up the recording device. “A full confession to pre-meditated murder via heavy metal poisoning, combined with the child torture evidence from the hospital? She will never see the light of day again. She’s looking at life without the possibility of parole—or the death penalty, given the pre-meditation.”
“Good,” I said. “But it’s not finished.”
“What do you mean?” the DA asked.
“Eleanor didn't act alone,” I said, looking out the grand window at the storm raging outside. “A woman like Eleanor doesn't have the technical expertise to set up a shell-company network that sophisticated. Someone backed her. Someone inside my own board of directors.”
My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a encrypted message from my private investigator, Marcus.
Richard. We hit Mercer’s server. Found the master ledger. Eleanor was just the middleman. The person who funded Sarah’s murder and orchestrated the takeover of Sterling Enterprises... is your own brother, Arthur.
May you like
My stomach churned. Arthur. My older brother, the vice-chairman of Sterling Enterprises. The man who sat beside me at Sarah’s funeral and held my shoulder while I wept.
The nightmare wasn't over. It was just beginning.
