Chapter 7 - THE DAY OF RECKONING

Six months later.

The State Supreme Courthouse was packed to maximum capacity. Hundreds of reporters stood outside under flashing news cameras, broadcasting the trial of the century live to millions of viewers across the globe.

“THE STERLING POISONING TRIAL: JUDGMENT DAY.”

Inside the grand courtroom, the air was heavy with solemn silence.

Sat at the defense table were Eleanor Vance and Arthur Sterling, both dressed in orange prison jumpsuits, their hands heavy with leather security belts and wrist restraints. Eleanor looked gaunt, her once-immaculate hair unkempt, her eyes hollow and filled with bitter malice. Arthur sat slouched, unable to look at the jury or the public gallery.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp black suit. Beside me sat Mrs. Gable, Maya’s dedicated school counselor, and Dr. Vance, who had both provided key testimony during the trial.

The judge, a stern elderly woman named Honorable Beatrice Hayes, slammed her wooden gavel down three times.

“Silence in the court,” Judge Hayes commanded. “We are ready to read the verdict.”

The jury foreman, a stoic middle-aged man, stood up holding the official court documents.

“In the matter of the State versus Eleanor Vance,” the foreman announced clearly. “On Count 1: First-Degree Murder of Sarah Sterling... we find the defendant... GUILTY.”

A loud gasp echoed through the courtroom, followed by instant whispers. Eleanor didn't flinch, but her hands gripped the table tightly.

“On Count 2: Attempted First-Degree Murder of Maya Sterling... GUILTY.” “On Count 3: Aggravated Child Abuse and Endangerment... GUILTY.” “On Count 4: Conspiracy to Commit Fraud... GUILTY.”

The foreman continued: “In the matter of the State versus Arthur Sterling... On all counts of Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder, Corporate Sabotage, and Wire Fraud... we find the defendant... GUILTY.”

Judge Hayes looked down at the two defendants with stern, unyielding eyes.

“Eleanor Vance, Arthur Sterling,” Judge Hayes spoke, her voice echoing off the high marble walls. “The level of calculated cruelty, sociopathy, and greed you have displayed is beyond human comprehension. You targeted an innocent mother, poisoned a grieving family, and systematically tortured a nine-year-old child for monetary gain.”

The judge didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Eleanor Vance, I sentence you to two consecutive life terms in the state maximum-security facility without the possibility of parole. You will never set foot in polite society again.”

Eleanor let out a sharp, choked gasp as the weight of her reality finally crushed her. Tears of rage spilled down her pale cheeks.

“Arthur Sterling,” the judge continued. “I sentence you to forty-five years in federal prison, with no chance of early release. Court is adjourned.”

BANG!

The gavel struck the block. The gallery burst into applause.

As the guards forced Eleanor to her feet to lead her away through the side door, she suddenly turned her head toward me. Her eyes were manic, filled with tears of pure hatred.

“You think she’ll ever forget, Richard?!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing wildly through the courtroom as she was dragged out. “She will carry the scars of what I did to her for the rest of her life! You saved her body, but I broke her mind!”

I didn't answer her. I didn't need to. I simply turned my back on her forever, walking out of the courtroom into the warm, bright afternoon sun.
