Chapter 7 - The Aftermath of the Empire

Three days later, the front page of every major Chicago newspaper carried the headline: WEDDING BELLS AND PRISON CELLS: THE VANCE FAMILY DYNASTY COLLAPSES IN MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR REVENGE PLOT.
The fall was swift and absolute.
With Arthur Sterling’s corporate takeover finalized, my parents were stripped of their sprawling North Shore mansion, their country club memberships, and every last penny of their liquid assets. They were forced to move into a tiny, two-bedroom retirement apartment on the south side of the city—a place where no one knew their name, and no one cared about their pedigree.
They tried calling me, of course.
My phone buzzed incessantly for forty-eight hours. Voicemails from my father begging for financial assistance; tearful, pathetic messages from my mother pleading for a chance to "reconnect as a family."
I didn't listen to a single one. I simply blocked their numbers, permanently deleting the last remaining tethers to my past.
Sophie was recovering remarkably well. The doctor at Northwestern Memorial Hospital confirmed that her head injury, while terrifying, had left no lasting physical damage. The white ribbon in her hair was stained with dried blood, but we framed it and hung it in our hallway as a reminder—not of pain, but of survival.
On a crisp Tuesday afternoon, I sat at our kitchen table drinking coffee when a courier dropped off a thick manila envelope bearing the seal of the Federal District Court.
Inside was a single legal document, signed by a federal judge, along with a cashier's check made out to my name.

It was restitution. Following the liquidation of the Vance-Sterling corporate assets, a federal judge had ordered that a portion of the recovered funds be awarded directly to Sophie and me as compensation for malicious prosecution and physical assault.
The amount on the check was staggering. More than enough to pay off our mortgage, fund Sophie’s college education ten times over, and start a brand-new life far away from the toxic shadow of my family.
