Chapter 4 - Returning to the Lion's Den

Officer Miller stood outside the security office door, tapping his radio. "Mrs. Davis, we’ve frozen the exits downstairs. Your parents and your brother are demanding to leave under the pretext of 'family privacy.' What do you want to do?"

I stood up, adjusting Sophie’s pink cardigan over her shoulders. She looked up at me, her small hand gripping my thumb. "Are we going back out there, Mommy?"

"Yes, baby," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "We’re going to watch them finish digging their own graves."

When we re-entered the ballroom, the atmosphere had shifted from shocked curiosity to tense, suffocating panic. The guests were trapped. Security guards stood at every exit, blocking the mahogany doors.

My mother was pacing near the sweetheart table, her silk gown rustling angrily. When she saw me re-enter with a medic trailing behind and two police officers flanking my sides, her face twisted into an ugly sneer.

"Evelyn! Have you lost your absolute mind?" she shrieked, marching toward us. "Calling the police to your own brother’s wedding reception? Do you have any idea what social circles we belong to? The mayor is sitting at table three!"

"Let her talk, Mother," a voice called out smoothly.

Elena stepped out from behind the bridal arch. The pristine white lace of her designer gown trailed behind her like fresh snow, completely untouched by the chaos of the evening. The cold, vacant smile on her face bore no resemblance to the blushing bride from an hour ago.

Preston swaggered behind her, having regained his arrogant posture now that he was back among his adoring sycophants.

"You called the cops, Evie?" Preston sneered, pointing a finger at me. "Over a spoiled brat who doesn't know how to keep her hands to herself? Officer, arrest her for harassment and disturbing the peace. We press charges."

Officer Miller didn't move. He simply looked at me, waiting for my cue.

I didn't answer Preston. Instead, I pulled a portable flash drive from my pocket, walked over to the DJ’s sound system console, and plugged it directly into the master auxiliary port.

"Play file one," I said loudly into the wireless microphone.
