Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the autumn leaves of Chicago turned a brilliant shade of amber and copper, painting the city streets in warm, comforting hues.

Our new home was a charming, sun-drenched townhouse in a quiet neighborhood three hours north of the city. There were no crystal chandeliers here. No marble floors. No wealthy relatives demanding perfection, and no toxic legacy to live up to.

Instead, our home smelled of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, vanilla candles, and laughter.

On a Saturday morning, I stood in the kitchen pouring orange juice into a glass when the front door swung open.

"Mom! Look what I found in the backyard!"

Sophie rushed into the kitchen, her cheeks flushed with the rosy glow of autumn air. Her hair was pulled back into a cheerful ponytail, completely hiding the small, faded scar near her temple—a badge of honor from a battle she had won.

She held out a small, velvety brown acorn in her palm. "Can we plant this in the front garden so it grows into a giant oak tree?"

I knelt down to her eye level, wiping a smudge of dirt from the tip of her nose, and smiled.

"Not an oak tree, sweetheart," I whispered, wrapping my arms around her tight. "Let’s plant something soft. Something beautiful. Something that grows strong roots without needing to crush anything else to reach the sun."

Sophie beamed, wrapping her small arms around my neck and burying her face in my shoulder. "Okay, Mommy. Let's do it together."

As I looked past her shoulder out the window toward our peaceful, sunlit garden, a profound sense of peace washed over me. The ghosts of my past were locked away behind iron bars and forgotten files. The wolves had circled, and the wolves had destroyed themselves.

We had survived the storm. And for the first time in our lives, we were finally free.
