Chapter 4 - The First Cry and the Police Interrogation

The most beautiful sound in the world pierced through the rhythmic hum of the operating room monitors: a sharp, lusty, furious wail.
“It’s a boy!” Dr. Sterling announced, her voice filled with profound relief as she lifted a tiny, squirming bundle wrapped in a sterile blue blanket over the surgical drape. “He’s breathing on his own, Nora. He’s a fighter, just like his mother.”
Tears streamed hot and fast down my cheeks, mixing with the surgical antiseptic on my neck. The overwhelming terror of the last two hours evaporated, replaced by an incandescent wave of fierce, protective love. I craned my neck, my vision blurring, until a nurse gently brought the tiny infant down so I could press my cheek against his warm, soft skin.
“Hi... hi, my baby,” I choked out, kissing his damp forehead. “Mommy’s here. I’ve got you. Nobody will ever hurt you.”
As the surgical team worked swiftly to close the incision, the nurse wheeled my healthy baby boy off to the neonatal recovery unit for standard monitoring, leaving me stabilized and breathing oxygen through a nasal cannula.
When I was wheeled out of recovery and into a private postpartum suite an hour later, Hannah was waiting by the door. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but she was smiling—a fierce, triumphant smile that didn't reach her eyes.
“Have you seen him?” Hannah whispered, rushing to my bedside and taking my hand. “He’s gorgeous, Nora. He looks just like you.”
“I held him,” I whispered, my voice thick with exhaustion and emotion. “Hannah... what’s happening? Where are Caleb and Diane?”
Hannah’s expression hardened. She pulled up a chair close to my bed, making sure the door was clicked shut.
“They aren't answering their phones anymore, Nora,” Hannah said quietly. “In fact, the last time Caleb tried to call me, it wasn't Caleb on the line. It was Detective Vance from the Financial Crimes Unit.”
Before I could process the words, a sharp knock echoed on the hospital room door. It swung open, revealing two men in dark suits holding official badges.
“Mrs. Rourke?” the taller detective asked politely. “I’m Detective Miller, and this is Detective Vance. I’m afraid we need to ask you a few questions regarding an ongoing criminal investigation into Caleb and Diane Rourke.”
I stared at them, my heart skipping a beat. “An investigation?”
“Attempted murder, wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny,” Detective Miller stated calmly, stepping further into the room. “We have recovered security footage from three different neighbors' security cameras overlooking the Rourke estate garden party. The footage clearly shows Mr. Caleb Rourke grabbing your arm and forcefully thrusting you backward into the deep end of the pool while you were pregnant.”
The room went dead silent. The abstract horror I had felt in the water suddenly materialized into hard, irrefutable federal reality.
“We also have warrants for their arrest,” Detective Vance added, pulling out a small notebook. “Mrs. Rourke, we are going to need your formal statement. But before we begin... do you wish to press charges to the fullest extent of the law?”
I looked past the detectives, out the large glass window of the hospital room where the sun was beginning to set over the city skyline. I thought of the twenty-three thousand dollars stolen from my grandfather’s memory. I thought of my newborn son sleeping safely down the hall. I thought of the man who had looked me in the eye as I suffocated in the water and decided my life was worth less than his gambling debts.

I straightened my shoulders against the hospital pillows, my voice steady, cold, and clear.
“Yes,” I said, looking straight into the detective's eyes. “Arrest them both.”
