Chapter 7 - The Courtroom Showdown

The county courthouse was packed to maximum capacity. Reporters, television crews, and curious onlookers spilled out of the public gallery and into the marble corridors, all desperate to catch a glimpse of the once-untouchable Rourke family facing justice.
I walked through the double doors of the courtroom wearing a sharp, tailored black blazer, my head held high. Hannah walked closely beside me, acting both as my rock and my bodyguard. Marcus Vance stood waiting at the defense table, his legal briefs neatly organized.
A moment later, the side door swung open, and the defendants were led in.
Caleb and Diane Rourke looked unrecognizable. Stripped of their designer clothes, expensive jewelry, and haughty arrogance, they wore standard orange prison jumpsuits. Their wrists and ankles were shackled together, clanking heavily against the linoleum floor with every miserable step.
Diane looked older, her hair unstyled, her face pale and sunken. When she spotted me sitting in the front row holding a framed photo of my newborn son, her eyes flashed with a venomous, feral hatred. She lunged forward, straining against her handcuffs.
“You ruined us!” Diane shrieked, spitting venom across the courtroom before the bailiffs forcefully shoved her down into the defense chair. “You ungrateful, scheming little leech! You orchestrated this entire thing just to steal our name and our money!”
“Order in the court!” Judge Vance—ironically sharing a last name with my attorney—slammed his gavel down with a deafening crack that echoed through the high-ceilinged room. “One more outburst from the defense table, Mrs. Rourke, and you will be held in direct contempt and removed from these proceedings.”
Diane slumped back into her chair, trembling with impotent rage, while Caleb stared down at his chained hands, refusing to make eye contact with anyone.
Judge Vance adjusted his glasses, looking down sternly from the bench. “We are here for the formal arraignment and asset distribution hearing regarding the state versus Caleb and Diane Rourke. The charges include grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy, and attempted premeditated homicide.”
The prosecutor stood up, smoothly laying out a mountain of digital evidence, bank wire receipts, forged life insurance documents, and the damning security camera footage from the garden party.
“Your Honor,” the prosecutor stated firmly, “the state has uncovered over four million dollars in illicitly obtained funds hidden across offshore shell accounts. Furthermore, clear video evidence proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the primary defendant, Caleb Rourke, intentionally attempted to drown his pregnant wife to collect a two-million-dollar life insurance payout.”
Marcus stood up next, adjusting his suit jacket. “And on behalf of my client, Mrs. Nora Rourke, we are petitioning the court for full emergency restitution—including the immediate transfer of all remaining unencumbered Rourke assets, real estate holdings, and bank accounts directly to Nora as sole compensation for damages, emotional distress, and child support.”
Caleb’s newly appointed public defender frantically stood up to object, but it was useless. The evidence was overwhelming, the public outcry was deafening, and the law was absolute.
Judge Vance looked down at Caleb and Diane, his expression carved out of stone.
“The court grants the prosecution's motion in full,” the judge declared, his voice ringing clearly through the silent courtroom. “All assets, properties, and bank holdings belonging to Caleb and Diane Rourke are hereby seized and transferred to Nora Rourke. Furthermore, due to the extreme severity of the charges and the direct threat to human life, bail is officially denied.”
The gavel came down one final time.
