Chapter 6 - The Fallout and the Unraveling

The mugshots of Caleb and Diane Rourke flashed across every major news network and local social media feed by sunrise the next morning.

Headline: ‘PROMINENT WEALTH MANAGERS ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR PONZI SCHEME AND ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE.’

Social media was an absolute bloodbath. Within hours, the video footage from the garden party—captured by a neighbor's security camera and leaked to an investigative journalist—went viral on Facebook and TikTok, garnering millions of views overnight. The clip clearly showed Caleb forcefully shoving me backward into the deep end, followed by Diane clutching the cash envelope while ignoring my drowning body.

The public outrage was swift and merciless.

Within forty-eight hours, the prestigious Rourke & Sterling Financial firm was boarded up, its assets liquidated by court order. Former clients, wealthy socialites, and country club acquaintances who had once bowed and scraped to Diane Rourke now lined up to publicly distance themselves, deleting every photo, invitation, and mention of the family from their social media profiles.

Meanwhile, in my private hospital room overlooking the city, the atmosphere was completely different.

The morning sun poured through the wide windows, warming the white sheets. Cradled gently in my arms was my baby boy, sleeping peacefully with tiny, rhythmic breaths, entirely safe from the toxic world we had just escaped.

Hannah sat in the armchair beside the bed, scrolling through her phone with an expression of pure, unadulterated amusement.

“Nora, you wouldn't believe this,” Hannah laughed, turning the screen toward me. “The local Facebook neighborhood group is in complete chaos. People are organizing a protest outside the county jail demanding that Diane be denied bail. And get this—Caleb’s defense attorney just quit because Caleb tried to blame the entire multi-million-dollar fraud on his own mother during their initial interrogation.”

I looked down at my sleeping son, feeling a profound, unshakeable peace settle over my chest. The heavy chains of fear, financial abuse, and emotional manipulation that had bound me for years were shattered forever.

“Let them tear each other apart,” I said softly, brushing a wisp of dark hair from my baby’s forehead. “They made their bed. Now they get to lie in it.”

Just then, a gentle knock sounded at the door.

It wasn't a nurse or a detective. It was a court-appointed bailiff holding a thick manila envelope stamped with the county seal.

“Mrs. Rourke?” the bailiff asked respectfully. “I have urgent legal documents regarding the emergency asset forfeiture and restitution hearings. Your presence—or your attorney’s presence—is requested at the courthouse tomorrow morning for the arraignment.”

I took the envelope, feeling its reassuring weight. “Thank you. Tell the judge I’ll be represented by Marcus Vance.”

The bailiff nodded, offered a polite smile, and stepped back out into the hallway. The trap was fully shut, and the final reckoning was about to begin.
