Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes on the Rourke Estate

While the police were taking my formal statement in the hospital suite, federal marshals and local SWAT units were executing the final phase of Operation Rourke.
The massive iron gates of the Rourke family estate—usually a symbol of unearned wealth and untouchable social status—were now blocked by three unmarked black SUVs and two police cruisers with flashing emergency lights. Neighbors peered nervously through their pristine front windows, whispering behind closed blinds as the illusion of the Rourkes' perfection shattered in real-time.
Inside the grand foyer of the mansion, Diane Rourke was pacing back and forth across the imported Italian marble floor, her expensive silk blouse wrinkled, her face twisted in absolute fury.
“I don't understand why your phone isn't connecting, Caleb!” Diane snapped, clutching her designer handbag against her chest like a shield. “That stupid girl is probably making a scene at the hospital just to get attention! We should have cut her off months ago. And now the bank alert says our corporate account is frozen? This is absurd! I have a lunch meeting with the Country Club committee tomorrow, and I will not be embarrassed by some penniless orphan!”
Caleb sat slumped on the velvet living room sofa, his face completely drained of color. He stared blankly at his smartphone, watching the screen flash with emergency alerts from his firm’s internal chat rooms. The servers had been seized. Clients were panicking. The Ponzi scheme had completely collapsed.
“Mom... it’s not just an account freeze,” Caleb muttered, his voice trembling as he looked up at his mother with hollow, panicked eyes. “The firm’s compliance officer just texted me. The feds raided the downtown office thirty minutes ago. They have the hard drives, Mom. They have the offshore wire receipts... they have everything.”
Diane froze in her tracks, her manicured hand flying to her throat. “Everything? But how? Who could possibly—?”
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The heavy oak front door shuddered under a series of massive, authoritative strikes.
“FBI! Open the door! Federal warrant!”
Diane let out a piercing shriek, dropping her handbag onto the floor as the cream-colored envelope containing my twenty-three thousand dollars spilled out onto the marble tiles.
Before Caleb could even stand up from the sofa, the heavy front door was kicked off its reinforced hinges with a deafening crash. Armed federal agents in tactical gear swarmed into the foyer, shouting instructions, their laser sights painting the walls in bright red dots.
“Down on the ground! Do it now! Hands behind your back!”
“Get off me! Do you know who I am?” Diane screamed, thrashing wildly as a female federal agent forced her down onto the expensive Italian marble, clicking steel handcuffs around her wrists. “My son is a prominent financial advisor! We are pillars of this community! You can't touch us!”
Caleb didn't even fight back. As two agents slammed him face-first onto the living room sofa, pressing his cheek against the velvet cushions, his eyes drifted toward the open doorway. There, standing on the threshold watching the entire scene unfold with cold, detached satisfaction, was Marcus Vance.

Marcus walked slowly into the foyer, stepping directly over Diane’s scattered designer handbag and the cream envelope containing my stolen inheritance. He crouched down, picked up the envelope, and slid it neatly into his breast pocket.
“You’re Caleb Rourke, right?” Marcus asked smoothly, flashing a sharp, predatory smile. “Just wanted to let you know... Nora and the baby are doing wonderful. And by the way? Say hello to your new cellmate for me.”
