Chapter 8 - The Betrayal WithinThe penthouse air grew so heavy it felt entirely unbreathable.

Marcus.
The man who managed fifty armed guards, who sat in on every tactical briefing, who had sworn absolute loyalty to Damian for over five years.
"Are you certain?" Damian’s voice was dangerously low, stripped of all human warmth, dropping straight into the sub-zero register of a man preparing an execution.
"The cleaner gave up the encrypted burner phone," Miller reported from the base facility. "The wire transfers trace straight to an offshore account registered in Marcus's sister's name. Mercer promised him half the waterfront district if he dropped your internal security grid tonight at dawn."
Damian didn't punch a wall. He didn't shout. He simply closed his eyes for two seconds, a mask of absolute, terrifying granite settling over his features.
"Where is Marcus now?" Damian asked.
"He's downstairs in the primary command center, coordinating the morning shift change. He thinks we're still blind."
"Lock down every elevator, stairwell, and exit in the building," Damian ordered coldly. "Do not let him leave the floor. I'm coming down."
He cut the comms, turning back toward me.
I was already standing on my feet, having dropped the tea mug onto the table. "You're going down there to face him."
"Stay here," Damian commanded, reaching for his shoulder holster and strapping the Sig Sauer back into place.
"Like hell I will," I snapped, stepping forward. "Marcus checked me into this building two years ago. He processed my employment files. If there's an inside traitor, I have a right to know how deep the rot goes."
Damian stared at me for three long, agonizing seconds. A silent battle played out behind his dark gray eyes—the instinct to lock me away in a golden cage versus the realization that I was far too stubborn, and far too lethal, to be caged.
He exhaled sharply, stepping close enough that I could feel the heat radiating off his chest.

"If I take you down there," Damian warned, his voice low and intense, "you stay behind me. Every second. No heroics. Understand?"
"Just lead the way, Mr. Cross."
