Chapter 1 - The Call That Re-Wrote the BoardroomThe silence stretched for three agonizing seconds before I found my voice.

“Mrs. Crane,” I said, trying to steady the sudden, violent thumping of my heart. “I am.”
On the other end of the line, Odessa Crane let out a low, gravelly chuckle that sounded like stones shifting in a stream. “Good. Because I didn’t call to offer you an interview, Camille. I called to offer you my chair.”
My breath caught. Northstar Dominion wasn’t just a development conglomerate; it was the titan that financed half the skyline in the city. Adrian’s firm had spent the last three years trying to secure a minor subcontract under Northstar, treating their executives like royalty. And now, the legendary founder—a notoriously reclusive woman who handpicked her protégés and chewed through corporate climbers for breakfast—was sitting in her private office, offering me the throne.
“Why me?” I managed to ask.
“Because for five years, I’ve watched brilliant strategies come out of Adrian Vance’s division that didn’t match his pedestrian intellect,” Odessa said, her tone razor-sharp. “I tracked the telemetry of those deals. I saw the structural genius behind the Henderson acquisition, the risk mitigation on the Pacific Tower, and the fund strategy Sienna Vey tried to parade as her own tonight. I trace brilliance, Camille. And yours has been buried under a mediocre man long enough.”
She knew. She had seen it all.
“When do you want me?” I asked, every trace of hesitation evaporating from my bones.

“Monday morning. 8:00 AM sharp. Bring your divorce lawyer’s contact info, too. You’re going to need a pit bull to dismantle your husband’s impending financial ambush, and I happen to own the best pack in the country.”
The call ended. I lowered the phone, walked over to the kitchen counter, and looked at the pale lilies Adrian had so carelessly placed beside the divorce papers. The air in the room felt different. The invisible cage I had lived in for nine years had just been unlocked from the outside.
