Chapter 1 - The Mask CracksRichard’s handsome face twitched, the polished veneer cracking just enough to reveal the cold, calculating void underneath. He didn’t drop to his knees to beg for forgiveness or offer a stuttered excuse. Instead, a slow, chilling smile spread across his lips as he withdrew his hand from his suit jacket. In his grip, he held a heavy leather strap connected to a secondary remote-detonation switch.

Emily clutched her swollen stomach, her breath coming in shallow, terrified gasps. The sheer betrayal paralyzed her vocal cords. For three years, she had believed Richard was her anchor, a devoted corporate lawyer who adored her. She had ignored the subtle red flags—the sudden disappearance of her inheritance funds, the isolated estate far from her friends, the way he looked at her like she was a depreciating asset.

“You... you wanted to kill me,” Emily sobbed, her voice trembling violently. “Our baby... how could you?”

“It’s simple, my sweet,” Richard sneered, taking a slow step down the curved staircase. “Your father’s empire is passing to you next month. But as your husband and sole legal proxy, a tragic fatal accident transfers everything straight to me. You were always just a stepping stone.”

Elena stepped in front of Emily, her spine rigid, her eyes burning with a primal, protective fury. Thirty-one years ago, another monster had ripped her child from her arms. She had spent decades tracking, hiding, and plotting, watching from the shadows of high society. She would not let history repeat itself.

“You won’t take another step, Richard,” Elena commanded, her voice carrying an authority that made the grown man involuntarily pause.

Richard laughed, a sharp, mocking sound. “And what are you going to do, you pathetic old maid? Clean my floors to death? Get her out of my sight before I ruin everything!”
