Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the PenthouseThe silence of the boutique hotel room was a heavy, suffocating blanket. Two weeks had passed since Lena Moretti—formerly Lena Vance—walked out of Dante’s life, leaving behind an empire of glass, steel, and golden handcuffs. Now, sitting at a small laminate table with the ultrasound printouts clutched in her trembling hands, her life had completely fractured.

Twins.
She was carrying Dante Moretti’s children.
In Chicago, the name Moretti commanded absolute terror. Dante ran the city’s shipping ports, financial syndicates, and underground networks with a cold, unyielding precision. Men whispered his name in dark rooms; enemies vanished without a trace. Yet, as Lena stared at the two faint, pulsating blips on the grey-scale monitor, she realized the invincible mafia king was completely blind to the most important thing happening in his own bloodline.
"Are you alright, Ms. Vance?" Dr. Hayes asked gently, handing her a tissue. "Carrying twins can bring an intense wave of emotional and physical shifts, especially under high stress."
"I'm fine," Lena lied, her voice steady despite the chaos roaring in her chest. "Just... processing."
She tucked the photos safely inside her journal. She had checked into a modest, secure apartment on the northern edge of the city under her maiden name, using cash reserves she’d secretly saved from freelance translation work over the years. She refused to touch a single cent of Dante’s money. To take his wealth was to remain tethered to his control.
Back at the downtown skyscraper, Dante Moretti was tearing his world apart.
His private office looked like a hurricane had hit it. Broken crystal glasses littered the marble floor where the anniversary dinner bag had dropped. The handmade ravioli had long since been thrown out, but the memory of Lena’s face—not angry, just hollowed out and empty—played on an endless loop in his mind.
"Find her," Dante snarled into his encrypted satellite phone, his voice a low, gravelly threat that made his head of security, Mateo, swallow hard.
"Boss, we’ve checked every major transit hub, her bank accounts, and her family records in Ohio," Mateo reported cautiously, standing just outside the threshold of Dante's desk. "She hasn't used her credit cards. She’s vanished completely. Sofia has been—"
"Do not mention that name in this room ever again," Dante cut him off, his dark eyes flashing with a lethal intensity that could freeze blood.

Sofia Vale had been dismissed, her family's corporate contracts severed within twenty-four hours of Lena’s departure. Dante didn't care about Sofia; she had been a calculated distraction pushed by his inner circle to maintain alliances, a foolish mistake he hadn't bothered to stop until it cost him everything.
Dante walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the glittering Chicago skyline. He didn't know where Lena was, but as he rubbed the gold band still heavy on his left ring finger, a terrifying realization gripped his chest: She isn't coming back. And for the first time in his ruthless life, Dante Moretti felt utterly powerless.
