Chapter 9 - The Restoration

The storm cleared by morning, leaving the Bainbridge Island estate bathed in crisp, golden autumn sunlight. The ocean was calm, mirroring the profound stillness inside the house.

Alexander sat on the back patio overlooking the water, a steaming mug of coffee in his hands. Footsteps approached softly behind him. He turned to see Aura standing there, wrapped in a comfortable blanket, her amber eyes bright and clear for the first time since he had met her at the rainy bus stop.

"Are the bad men gone?" she asked quietly.

Alexander stood up, walked over, and knelt down to her eye level, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "They're gone, Aura. And they're never coming back. Halcyon Tech belongs to its rightful owner now—you."

Aura looked down at her feet, then back up at him. "Does that mean we have to live in a giant castle forever?"

Alexander laughed—a real, booming laugh that carried out over the water. "We can live wherever you want. A cabin in the woods, an apartment in the city, or right here. Whatever makes you happy."

Aura smiled, a small, genuine curve of her lips that mirrored her mother’s smile from twenty years ago. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

"I like it here," she whispered. "With you."

Alexander closed his eyes, holding her tight, feeling the final, aching pieces of his shattered past fall perfectly into place.
