Chapter 5 - The Ambush on the HighwayThe rain had started up again, turning the highway into a slick, glistening ribbon of asphalt flanked by dense, dripping pine forests. My unmarked cruiser tore through the downpour at ninety miles per hour, my siren wailing a piercing warning into the gray morning mist, though out here in the rural expanse, there was no one around to hear it.

My mind raced. Jonah Vance wasn't just facing a murder charge anymore—he was the linchpin of a massive, corrupted syndicate involving judges, politicians, and dirty cops. If he slipped across the state line with the help of his corrupted network, he would vanish into offshore accounts and international hideouts forever, taking the truth about Sarah Vance and a dozen other victims with him.
"Dispatch, this is Detective Vance," I spoke into the encrypted dashboard radio, keeping one hand locked firmly on the steering wheel as the cruiser hydroplaned slightly around a sharp curve. "I'm in hot pursuit of Transport Unit 4—unauthorized transfer of federal suspect Jonah Vance. They are heading west on Route 9 toward the county border. Requesting immediate air support and tactical backup."
“Negative, Detective,” came the flat, distorted voice of the county dispatcher over the radio static. “All units in Sector 4 have been reassigned to a simultaneous domestic disturbance call on Maple Street. You are out of your jurisdiction. Stand down and return to the precinct immediately.”
A cold wave of realization washed over me. Maple Street didn't have a domestic disturbance call. The entire local dispatch system had been compromised from the inside by Judge Sterling’s network. I was completely on my own.
"I am not standing down," I snapped into the mic, cutting the radio connection before they could issue a formal suspension order.
Up ahead, through the curtain of heavy rain and spray kicked up from the asphalt, the amber flashing lights of a private security transport van materialized around a bend, pushing hard through the center lane.
Behind the van trailed two unmarked black SUVs with tinted windows and no license plates. Enforcers.
They weren't just transporting Jonah to safety—they were running a clean-up operation, and I was the primary target.
As if sensing my approach in their side mirrors, the rear SUV suddenly slammed on its brakes, drifting sideways across both lanes of the highway in a violent, deliberate roadblock designed to send my cruiser spinning off the embankment and down into the rocky ravine below.
"Oh no you don't," I muttered through clenched teeth.
Instead of hitting the brakes, I slammed my foot hard down on the accelerator. The engine roared with a deafening, mechanical scream, surging forward like a bullet shot from a gun.
At the very last second, I wrenched the steering wheel hard to the left, pitching the cruiser into a violent, high-speed power slide. The side of my vehicle grazed the rear bumper of the black SUV with a sickening screech of grinding metal and flying sparks, violently shoving the heavy vehicle out of the way and sending it crashing backward into the concrete guardrail.
The second SUV immediately veered out from behind the transport van, accelerating rapidly to cut me off, its passenger-side window rolling down to reveal a masked figure pointing the barrel of a submachine gun straight at my windshield.
Crack! Crack! Crack!
Bullet holes starred across the laminated glass right in front of my face, shattering the outer layer into a spiderweb of white fractures. Shards of glass sprayed across the dashboard.
I ducked low behind the steering wheel, steering entirely by instinct and the glow of the road lines, my heart hammering like a trapped bird against my ribs.
I reached down to my tactical belt, unclipped my department-issued service pistol, rolled down my driver-side window just enough to let the wind and rain whip inside, and fired three rapid shots back toward the pursuing SUV.
Ping! One of my rounds struck their front tire.

The black SUV let out a violent screech of blown rubber, fishtailing wildly across the wet asphalt before careening off the road, smashing through a wooden billboard, and plunging nose-first into a dense thicket of pine trees.
That left just the transport van carrying Jonah.
