Chapter 7 - The Confession on TapeInside the dark, cramped cargo bay of the transport van, Jonah Vance sat huddled on a bench seat, his expensive suit ruined, his handcuffs dangling loosely from one wrist where he had desperately tried to pick the lock with a piece of wire from the van's interior lining.

When the doors flew open and the cold morning light flooded the interior, he flinched violently, throwing his hands up to shield his eyes.
"Don't shoot! Please! Don't shoot!" he sobbed, all the arrogant, silver-tongued swagger completely evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, trembling shell of a man.
"You're not going to be shot, Jonah," I said coldly, lowering my weapon just enough to keep him covered while stepping up into the bed of the van. "You're going to trial. For the assault on Chloe. For the kidnapping and murder of Sarah Vance. And for running a decade-long extortion syndicate with Judge Sterling."
Jonah shook his head frantically, his lower lip trembling. "You don't understand... Sterling made me do it! He had leverage over me! If I didn't help him cover up his illegal land schemes and silence people who got too close, he would have ruined everything I built!"
"And Sarah Vance?" I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "Did Sterling make you throw her body into the abandoned limestone quarry behind the Miller estate too?"
Jonah froze. His eyes widened in absolute horror as he stared up at me.
"How... how did you know about the quarry?" he whispered, his voice barely audible over the rain. "The police searched that property fifty times..."
"They didn't search the deep ventilation shafts," I said, pulling a digital micro-recorder from my tactical vest pocket and pressing the record button, holding it down where the glowing red light blinked steadily in the dim interior of the van. "Go ahead, Jonah. Tell the state prosecutor all about the ventilation shaft. Tell us where to find Sarah's remains. Because every single word you are saying right now is being transmitted directly in real-time to the internal affairs command server downtown."
Jonah stared at the blinking red light on the recorder, his face draining of every last trace of color. The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow: he had been completely outplayed, not by luck or brute force, but by a methodical, ironclad trap that had been closing around him from the very second Chloe’s phone call connected at 9:17 p.m. the night before.
He slumped forward, resting his forehead against his handcuffed knees, and let out a long, shuddering sigh that sounded like the final expiration of a dying animal.
"The quarry... second shaft on the eastern ridge," he muttered into the dark metal floorboards, his voice breaking entirely. "She... she wouldn't stop screaming after the gala... and I lost control... just like I lost control with Chloe last night..."

I clicked off the recorder, secured it safely in my pocket, and reached down, grabbing Jonah by the collar of his ruined silk shirt and hauling him upright.
"You're done, Jonah," I said into his ear as I clicked a fresh, heavy set of steel tactical cuffs around his wrists, locking them double-tight. "Your empire of lies is over."
