Chapter 1

The clock struck 2:00 a.m. when Elena made the most dangerous decision of her small, tragic life.

Outside, rain poured mercilessly over the agave fields surrounding the hacienda, turning the dirt roads into rivers of mud. But she no longer cared about the cold or the storm.

She feared the monster sleeping inside the main house far more.

With trembling hands, she wrapped Mateo, her one-year-old baby, in a worn rebozo and tied him securely against her chest. Then she took the hand of Lucía, her six-year-old daughter, and whispered for her not to make a sound.

It had been only three months since Arturo, Elena’s husband, had died from a sudden and mysterious illness.

From that day on, the young widow’s life had become a living nightmare.

Rogelio, Arturo’s older brother, had not only seized the family’s land and livestock, but had also made it painfully clear that, in his eyes, Elena and her two children now belonged to him as payment for her late husband's so-called "debts."

His predatory stares, violent outbursts, and threats to sell little Lucía into servitude had pushed Elena beyond her breaking point.

They ran through the wilderness for nearly four hours.

Elena’s sandals sank into the thick mud with every step, and every breath burned in her lungs.

She knew that once dawn arrived and Rogelio discovered she had vanished from the workers' shack, his fury would know no limits.

She had to disappear deep into the mountains...

To the one place no one in the village dared to enter:

Doña Inés's Hill.

Throughout the village, Inés's name was spoken only in whispers.

People claimed she was a witch.

That she spoke with the dead.

That her cabin was cursed.

But Elena no longer feared ghosts.

She feared the living.

As the first rays of sunlight pierced through the morning mist, they finally found the cabin.

It was surrounded by strange herbs, carved animal skulls, and the heavy scent of burning copal drifting through the damp mountain air.

Before Elena could even knock on the weathered wooden door...

It slowly opened by itself.

Standing there was Doña Inés.

She was a tiny woman with a face carved by deep wrinkles that resembled cracks in dry earth, and piercing black eyes that seemed capable of reading a person's soul.

She said nothing.

She simply looked at the two shivering children and gave a slight nod, inviting them inside.

For the next twelve hours, Elena and her children slept beside the warm fireplace.

But their brief peace would not last.

Shortly after five in the afternoon, the sound of horses neighing and angry voices shattered the silence of the forest.

Elena looked through the window...

And her heart nearly stopped.

Four men on horseback had arrived.

Leading them was Rogelio.

A rifle rested firmly in his hands, and his face burned red with rage.

He had followed their footprints through the mud.

"Come out, you filthy beggar!" Rogelio shouted, his voice echoing through the pine trees.

"You and those children are mine!

You belong to me!"

Elena pulled both children tightly into her arms, frozen with terror.

But Doña Inés did not flinch.

She calmly picked up her sturdy oak walking stick and slowly walked toward the door.

She opened it wide.

The tiny elderly woman stood firmly in the doorway, dwarfed by the massive horses before her...

Yet somehow casting a shadow that seemed to swallow the fading evening light.

A sudden gust of wind swept through the clearing, sending dust and dry leaves swirling into the air.

Rogelio's horse suddenly stepped backward, snorting nervously and refusing to move forward.

"What do you want, you old witch?" Rogelio growled, raising his rifle toward her to hide the sudden tremble in his hands.

"Move aside.

I'm here to take what's mine."

Doña Inés stared directly into his eyes.

There was no fear.

No anger.

Only a chilling certainty.

"You didn't come here for this woman...

or for her children," the old woman said, her raspy voice sounding like stones grinding together.

"You came because you're afraid.

You came to silence the only people who can expose the blood that's already on your hands."

Rogelio's face instantly turned pale.

The ranch hands behind him exchanged confused glances.

You won't believe what happens next...
