Chapter 5 - The Labyrinth of Whispers—Betrayal in the Shadows

The air inside the abandoned silver mine was cold, damp, and smelled of sulfur. Elena ran as fast as she could, her sandals slipping on the wet rocks. Lucía whimpered, holding tightly to her mother’s skirt, her small legs struggling to keep up.

"Mama, where are we going? It’s too dark," Lucía cried.

"Just a little further, my love. Keep moving, don't look back," Elena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Behind them, the muffled sounds of the burning forest above could still be heard—low, rumbling vibrations that shook dust and small pebbles from the cavern ceiling. But then, a new sound emerged.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Footsteps. Heavy, hurried, and closing in fast.

Elena panicked. Had Rogelio found the secret passage? She looked around wildly. The tunnel branched off into three different directions. She chose the middle path, dragging Lucía into a narrow crevice behind a massive stalagmite, blowing out her torch to plunge them into absolute darkness.

She held her breath, pressing Mateo tightly against her chest to keep him quiet.

The footsteps grew louder. A beam of flashlight swept across the damp stone walls, illuminating the wet cavern.

"Elena!" a voice whispered-shouted. "Elena, are you there? It’s Miguel!"

Elena froze. Miguel—the young ranch hand who had been with Rogelio earlier. Was he searching for them to drag them back to his boss, or was he trying to help? She didn't dare make a sound.

Miguel stopped just a few feet from their hiding spot. He was panting heavily, holding a flashlight in one hand and a revolver in the other.

"Elena, please," Miguel pleaded, his voice cracking with genuine fear. "If you can hear me... I didn't know Rogelio was going to burn the hill. He’s crazy! He killed Doña Inés... he beat her and left her in the burning cabin. I couldn't stop him. But I won't let him hurt those kids. I know what he did to Sofia, his first wife. My father was the one who poured the concrete over that well... he died of guilt a year later. Please, let me help you get out of here!"

Elena’s heartached for Inés, a sob catching in her throat. But she had to think of her children. Could she trust Miguel? Or was this a trap to lure her out?

Suddenly, a loud, mocking laugh echoed from the entrance of the tunnel.

"Very touching, Miguel," a voice boomed.

Rogelio stepped into the flashlight's beam. He was covered in ash, his clothes torn, and he was holding a double-barreled shotgun.

"I knew you didn't have the stomach for this work," Rogelio sneered, staring at Miguel. "Just like your pathetic father. You think you can betray me and walk away? On my land?"

"This isn't your land, Rogelio!" Miguel yelled, spinning around to aim his revolver at his boss. "You stole it! You killed your own brother!"

"Arturo was weak," Rogelio hissed. "He wanted to give everything to a woman who is nothing but a beggar, and a girl who isn't even old enough to write her own name. I built this empire. I deserve it!"

Before Miguel could pull the trigger, Rogelio fired. The blast of the shotgun was deafening in the enclosed space of the cave.

Miguel gasped, dropping his flashlight as he collapsed to the wet stone floor, clutching his chest.

Elena let out a scream of pure terror, exposing their hiding spot.

Rogelio turned his head toward the sound, a sickening, triumphant smile spreading across his soot-stained face. "Found you," he whispered.
