Chapter 6 - The Witch’s Trap—The Cavern of the Damned

Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed Lucía’s hand and ran deeper into the maze of tunnels, leaving the flashlight behind. They ran blindly through the darkness, guided only by the distant, faint green glow of bioluminescent moss growing on the cavern walls.

Behind them, Rogelio’s heavy, slow footsteps echoed, accompanied by the dry click of him reloading his shotgun.

"You can't run forever, Elena!" Rogelio’s voice echoed off the damp walls, sounding as if it were coming from everywhere at once. "You don't know these caves. One wrong step, and you'll fall into a hundred-foot shaft. Just give me the girl, and maybe I’ll let you and the baby live!"

Elena knew he was lying. He couldn't let any of them live now.

Suddenly, the tunnel opened up into a massive, cavernous chamber. In the center of the chamber was a deep, black abyss—an old mining shaft. A unstable, rotting wooden bridge spanned the gap, leading to an exit on the far side where a faint sliver of moonlight filtered down from a crack in the mountain.

Elena stopped at the edge of the bridge. It looked incredibly fragile, the ropes frayed and the wooden planks green with mold.

"Mama, I’m scared," Lucía whispered, looking down into the bottomless black pit.

"Close your eyes, Lucía. Hold onto Mama's hand, and do not look down," Elena commanded, her voice suddenly finding a strange, fierce strength.

They stepped onto the bridge. The wood creaked violently under their weight. Step by step, they made their way across. Just as they reached the halfway point, Rogelio emerged from the tunnel behind them.

"Stop right there!" he roared, aiming his shotgun at the ropes of the bridge. "Take one more step, and I’ll shoot the ropes. You’ll all plunge to the bottom of the earth!"

Elena froze. She was trapped. If she ran, he would shoot. If she stayed, he would capture them.

But then, the air in the cavern suddenly turned icy cold. The faint green moss on the walls flared with a brilliant, unnatural intensity. A low, vibrating hum filled the chamber, shaking the very stones beneath their feet.

From the tunnel Rogelio had just exited, a figure slowly emerged.

Rogelio spun around, his shotgun raised, his eyes bulging in pure terror.

It was Doña Inés.

She was covered in soot, her clothes singed by the fire, and blood dripped from a wound on her forehead. But she walked upright, without her walking stick, her eyes glowing with a terrifying, otherworldly light.

"How... how are you alive?!" Rogelio screamed, taking a step backward onto the unstable edge of the cavern floor. "I saw the roof collapse on you! I saw the flames consume you!"

"You cannot burn what is already made of ash, Rogelio," Inés said, her voice echoing with the force of a thousand restless souls. "This mountain does not belong to you. The earth beneath your feet has rejected you."

Suddenly, the ground beneath Rogelio began to crack. The heavy vibrations of the cavern, combined with the structural damage from the fire above, had triggered a collapse.

"No! No!" Rogelio screamed, dropping his shotgun as he scrambled to find grip on the sliding rocks.

But it was too late. The ledge he was standing on crumbled into the abyss. With a final, piercing shriek of terror, Rogelio fell into the bottomless dark of the old mining shaft, his voice fading into nothingness as he hit the rocks below.
