Chapter 3 - THE RAT IN THE SHADOWSThe silence inside the armored SUV was heavier than the blizzard raging outside. Rocco’s televised hit hit us like a physical sledgehammer. I looked at my hands; they were covered in Dante’s blood, trembling violently.

"Fifty million for Luca..." I whispered, my voice breaking. "Ten million for you. They're going to turn every criminal in the country against us."
Dante didn't answer immediately. He was staring at the black dashboard screen, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles in his neck strained against his skin. "Rocco always was a petty bastard," Dante growled quietly. "He couldn't win the syndicate vote, so he bought an army with stolen cartel money."
"Dad..." Luca whimpered, burying his face deeper into my jacket. "Is Uncle Rocco going to hurt us?"
Dante reached over, placing his massive hand gently on the boy's head. The sudden softness in his posture was jarring—a lethal killer instantly transforming into a protective father. "No one is touching you, Luca. I promise you on your mother’s memory."
We drove for another three hours under the dark canopy of the heavy forest, keeping off the main highways. The remaining convoy had split into smaller, low-profile tactical groups to avoid satellite tracking, leaving only twenty heavy SUVs surrounding our primary transport.
At 8:00 AM, the convoy pulled into an underground logging depot carved directly into the side of a granite mountain. The massive steel doors slid shut behind us, locking out the cold and sealing us in pitch-black darkness until the halogen floodlights flickered to life overhead.
Dante stepped out of the vehicle, unsteady on his feet. I immediately caught his arm, throwing his heavy shoulder over my neck to keep him from collapsing.
"I don't need your pity, nurse," he muttered, though he relied heavily on my support.
"It’s not pity, it’s medical science," I snapped back, helping him toward a makeshift medical bay set up inside the bunker. "You lost over two liters of blood, you have a high-grade fever starting, and if I don't flush that wound with sterile saline in the next ten minutes, sepsis will kill you long before your brother does."
We reached a steel surgical table. Val and three elite bodyguards stood watch outside the glass partition, their submachine guns raised, sweeping the dark corners of the bunker.
"Val," Dante barked, wincing as I forced him down onto the metal table. "How did Rocco know our exact escape route through the south pass? Only six people had access to those encrypted coordinates."
Val’s eyes widened slightly under his tactical mask. "Boss... we swept all communications before we left the cabin. The channel was triple-encrypted using military-grade ciphers. There’s no way he intercepted the signal."
"Signals aren't intercepted, Val," I spoke up, setting up a bag of IV fluids and driving a thick needle into the vein on the back of Dante’s hand. "Information is given. You have a rat inside your inner circle."
The air in the room instantly dropped ten degrees. The bodyguards outside exchanged suspicious glances, their fingers resting nervously against their triggers.
Dante’s eyes locked onto Val with terrifying intensity. "Clara is right. Rocco knew about the bridge. He knew about the time frame. He even knew Clara was a medical doctor before my own men saw her credentials."
Val took a cautious step back, raising his hands in defense. "Boss! You’ve known me for twelve years! I took a bullet for you in Miami! I would never trade your life to Rocco!"
"Everyone has a price, Val," Dante said smoothly, his voice dangerously calm. "What was yours? Money? Immunity? Or did Rocco threaten your family?"
"I swear on my mother’s grave, it wasn't me!" Val pleaded, his voice trembling.
Suddenly, the halogen lights overhead began to flicker violently. A loud, high-pitched screech echoed through the bunker's speaker system, followed by the heavy clanking of steel gears.
The massive outer blast doors of the underground depot began to slowly roll open, letting the blinding white mountain air and freezing wind roar into the facility.
"What is happening?!" I screamed, clutching Luca to my chest as the cold wind swept through the medical room.
"The security override was activated from inside the control booth!" one of the guards shouted, rushing toward the main console.
Before he could reach it, a series of heavy flashbang grenades bounced across the concrete floor, detonating in blinding flashes of light and deafening explosions.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
My ears rang violently, my vision washing out into absolute white. I fell to the floor, wrapping my body around Luca to protect him from the shockwaves. Through the ringing in my ears, I heard the rapid, heavy chatter of automatic rifles echoing from the entrance.
Rocco’s death squad hadn't just found us.
They were already inside the base.
Through the smoke and flashing lights, I saw a figure standing near the control booth override panel. It wasn't Val.
It was Marcus—Dante’s personal medic, the man who had handed Dante the encrypted phone at my cabin hours earlier.
Marcus smiled, holding a high-frequency tracking beacon in his hand, its red light pulsing steadily.
"Sorry, Boss," Marcus called out over the sound of incoming gunfire. "Rocco offered me twenty million dollars and a tropical island. You can't beat that kind of retirement plan!"
Marcus pulled the trigger on a smoke grenade, dropping it at his feet as dozens of heavily armed mercenaries surged through the open blast doors, firing indiscriminately into our ranks.

Dante ripped the IV line cleanly out of his arm, blood spraying across his white bandages. He drew his sidearm with terrifying speed, his face contorted in pure, unadulterated fury.
"CLARA! GET LUCA TO THE ESCAPE TUNNEL NOW!" Dante roared, throwing himself off the surgical table. "I'LL COVER THE REAR!"
