Chapter 5 - THE FROZEN LAKE AMBUSHThe blast wave from Val’s sacrifice knocked us off our feet, sending a dense cloud of ancient dust and pulverized stone rushing through the narrow tunnel. I coughed violently, shielding Luca under my heavy coat as rock dust settled over our hair and clothes.

When the dust cleared, absolute silence enveloped the shaft. The pursuing strike force had been buried under dozens of tons of collapsed granite. But we had no time to mourn.
"Up," Dante grunted, hauling himself up using a rusting iron ladder that led to a vertical service shaft overhead. "The ventilation hatch is right above us."
With the last of his fading strength, Dante pushed open the heavy rusted grate at the top of the ladder. Blinding daylight and a rush of sub-zero wind poured into the dark hole.
We dragged ourselves out into the brutal elements.
We were standing on the steep, pine-forested cliffs overlooking Lake Superior. The storm had finally passed, leaving behind a sky of crystalline, cold blue and an endless expanse of blinding white snow. But the view was far from peaceful.
Two miles out across the vast, frozen surface of the lake, a massive fleet of dark vehicles was sweeping across the ice.
It was Rocco’s main column. He was surrounding the entire base of the mountain.
"They knew the mine exited near the shore," Dante muttered, leaning heavily against a snow-dusted pine tree. His pulse was weak, his breath coming in jagged, wheezing hitches. "Rocco covered every escape route."
"We can't outrun them on foot," I said, checking his neck for a carotid pulse. It was dangerously thready. "You're bleeding internally, Dante. If I don't perform a needle decompression on your chest right now, your lung is going to collapse from air trapped in your thoracic cavity!"
"No time..." Dante gasped, his eyes darting across the shoreline below.
"I don't care about your timeline!" I screamed at him, grabbing him by his tactical vest and forcing his gaze onto mine. "Listen to me, Dante! You die here, and Luca is left completely defenseless against a psychopath who put a fifty-million-dollar hit on his head! Do you want your brother to raise your son?!"
Dante’s eyes flared with a terrifying, protective fire. "Do it," he snapped through gritted teeth.
"Luca, look away," I commanded, pulling a long, thick 14-gauge medical decompression needle from my emergency pouch.
I cut through his bloody undershirt, pinpointed the second intercostal space on his right chest line, and slammed the heavy needle straight between his ribs.
A loud, sharp hiss of trapped air and dark blood escaped the needle valve like a bursting tire.
Dante let out a ragged, agonizing roar, his entire body tensing as his collapsed lung instantly reinflated. He slumped against the tree, gasping deep, full lungfuls of freezing mountain air as color slowly returned to his pale face.
"God..." he breathed out, staring at me with a mix of shock and profound respect. "You really are a nightmare of a doctor."
"I told you I wasn't letting you die," I said, wiping blood off my hands with snow.
Suddenly, the unmistakable whir-whir-whir of heavy helicopter blades echoed from behind the ridge.
"INCOMING!" Dante yelled, tackling me and Luca into a deep snowdrift.
A sleek, black military attack helicopter crested the tree line, its twin miniguns spinning as they scanned the cliffside. The red laser targeting system painted the white snow around us with ominous light.
Through the cockpit glass, I saw the pilot—and sitting in the copilot seat, holding a radio microphone, was Rocco Bellaro himself.
His voice boomed from the helicopter’s external megaphones, echoing across the frozen wilderness like the voice of a god.
"Dante!" Rocco laughed, the sound twisted by loud electronic static. "Look at you! The great King of Detroit, hiding in the snow like a beaten dog! You’re relying on a woman to save your life!"
The helicopter hovered fifty feet above us, the violent downwash from its blades kicking up a blinding vortex of snow and ice.
"Give me the boy, Dante!" Rocco shouted. "Give me Luca, and I’ll let you die like a soldier! Refuse, and I’ll turn this entire ridge into a bloody crater!"
Dante stood up from the snow, pulling his son behind his back. He reached into his pocket, pulling out his heavy gold signet ring—the symbol of supreme authority over the Bellaro Syndicate.
He held the ring up high into the freezing wind, staring directly at his brother in the sky.
"You want my crown, Rocco?!" Dante shouted back, his voice cutting through the roar of the helicopter engines. "COME DOWN HERE AND TAKE IT FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS!"

Rocco’s face darkened with absolute malice. He picked up his radio microphone and gave a single word command to his gunner.
"Fire."
