Chapter 4 - THE SUBTERRANEAN HUNTThe air inside the underground depot smelled of cordite, burning diesel, and raw blood. Heavy automatic fire echoed off the cavernous concrete walls like thunder. Sparks rained down as bullets shredded metal crates and light fixtures, plunging the facility into high-contrast crimson emergency lighting.

"This way!" Val screamed, charging through the fog of tear gas with his assault rifle raised. "The secondary emergency tunnel leads to the old mine shafts under the ridge!"

I didn't argue. I grabbed Luca by the hand and sprinted behind Val, keeping low to avoid the stray bullets whipping through the air. Behind us, Dante was a force of terrifying destruction. Despite his blood loss and fever, he used the heavy steel surgical table as mobile cover, dropping two advancing mercenaries with precise headshots before racking another magazine into his pistol.

"Marcus!" Dante’s voice boomed over the gunfire, deep and full of venom. "You won't live long enough to spend a single dollar of that money!"

"Move, Clara! Move!" Val yelled, slamming his hand against a heavy hydraulic door at the back of the bay.

The heavy iron door groaned open, revealing a dark, narrow stone tunnel that descended steep into the bowels of the mountain. Cold, damp air rushed up to meet us, smelling of wet rust and rotting wood.

I looked back. Dante was firing his last round, knocking down an attacker who was charging him with a shotgun. He ducked behind a pillar, reloading with one hand while clutching his bleeding shoulder with the other.

"Dante! Get in here!" I screamed over the din.

He turned, saw us at the doorway, and made a desperate dive across the open floor just as a hail of heavy lead pulverized the concrete where he had been standing a second prior. He slammed through the doorway, sliding across the slick stone floor.

Val instantly hit the manual release lever.

The heavy iron door slammed shut with a deafening CLANG, and Val jammed a steel reinforced bar through the handles, sealing us inside the dark tunnel. Seconds later, heavy impacts rattled the iron door from the other side as Rocco’s men tried to kick it down.

"That won't hold them for long," Dante panted, resting his head against the cold stone wall. His skin was gray, his breathing agonizingly shallow. "They have thermal breaching charges."

I immediately dropped to my knees beside him, whipping my flashlight out. "You're bleeding internally now, Dante. That dive just tore open the muscle tissue near your collarbone."

"It doesn't matter..." he wheezed, his eyes rolling back slightly. "Get Luca out..."

"Shut up!" I yelled, slapping his cheek lightly to keep him conscious. "I am not letting you die in a damp cave after I spent four hours stitching your arrogant ass back together! Stand up!"

Luca grabbed his father’s limp hand, tears streaming down his smudged cheeks. "Dad, please stand up. Please don't go to sleep."

The sheer sound of his son's voice seemed to pull Dante back from the brink of unconsciousness. With a low, primal roar, he forced himself to his feet, leaning heavily against my shoulder.

"Val," Dante ordered, his voice faint. "Where does this shaft lead?"

"It’s an abandoned 19th-century iron mine," Val explained, shining a flashlight down the endless black corridor. "It winds three miles through the granite base before exiting near the frozen lake on the east side of the valley. But it’s a labyrinth. One wrong turn without a map, and we freeze to death in the dark."

BOOM!

A violent explosion rocked the iron door behind us. The steel frame bulged inward, orange flames spilling through the cracks.

"They're breaching!" Val yelled. "Run!"

We sprinted into the abyss. The ground beneath our feet was jagged and soaked with freezing groundwater. Low wooden support beams creaked precariously overhead, dripping water onto our heads.

Behind us, the sound of the iron door blowing off its hinges echoed down the shaft, followed by the rhythmic, terrifying sound of heavy boots pursuing us into the darkness.

"They have night-vision goggles!" Val whispered, stopping at a three-way junction in the tunnel. "They can see our thermal signatures through the pitch black!"

I looked at the three branching paths, then down at the ground. My medical instincts instantly kicked in.

"Wait," I said, pointing my light at the floor. "Look at the air currents."

"What?" Val asked, panicked.

"The left tunnel has condensation blowing toward us," I explained rapidly, pointing to tiny wisps of steam floating near the ceiling. "That means it connects to an upper ventilation shaft that vents out to the cold surface air. The right tunnel smells like stagnant sulfur—it’s a dead-end drop-off. The middle tunnel is sloped downward into a flooded basin."

"Left tunnel! Go!" Dante barked.

We ducked into the left tunnel just as laser sights began painting the stone walls behind us with bright red dots.

"I see them!" a voice shouted from the main corridor. "Target acquired! Fire!"

A volley of silenced rifle shots tore through the dark. Val let out a sharp gasp, stumbling forward and slamming into the wall.

"Val!" I caught him before he hit the ground.

A heavy 7.62 bullet had shattered his thigh bone. He was completely immobilized.

"Leave me," Val choked out, dragging himself against the cavern wall and pulling two fragmentation grenades from his chest rig. "I'm holding you back. Take the boss and the kid and keep moving."

"Val, no!" Luca cried.

Val looked up at the seven-year-old boy, offering a grim, bloody smile. "It’s been an honor, little boss." He turned to Dante. "Kill that bastard Rocco for me."

Dante looked at his loyal lieutenant for a long, silent second. He didn't offer empty words or dramatic goodbyes. He simply placed a hand on Val’s shoulder and gave a single, tight nod.

"Clara, grab Luca. Move," Dante said, his voice cold as iron.

I pulled Luca away as Val turned around, pulling the safety pins from both grenades with his teeth.

As we sprinted up the steep inclining tunnel toward the light of the ventilation surface, a deafening explosion ripped through the subterranean cavern behind us, followed by the terrifying sound of hundreds of tons of granite rock collapsing in a thunderous avalanche.

The tunnel behind us was completely sealed in a tomb of stone.
