Chapter 5 - THE ALLIANCE IN THE DARKThe fog was a blinding wall of white, swallowing the cliffside trail as Sophie sprinted upward with every ounce of strength in her small body. Her lungs burned with the freezing salt air, and her legs ached, but the image of Richard’s face in the boathouse drove her forward.

She burst out onto the paved driveway of the Monterey estate, her chest heaving. The grand house stood silent and imposing under the moonlight, its dark windows staring down at her like empty eye sockets.

She needed Eleanor Vance.

Sophie bolted toward the guest parking area where Eleanor’s sleek black Mercedes-Benz was parked. To her utter shock, the driver's side door was open, and the interior dome light was on.

Standing beside the car, smoking a slim Virginia cigarette that glowed a fiery orange in the dark, was Eleanor herself. She wasn't panicking. In fact, she was calmly typing on her high-end tablet, wearing an impeccably tailored trench coat.

Sophie stumbled forward, collapsing against the side of the car. "Mrs... Mrs. Vance..."

Eleanor looked down, her expression shifting from cold calculation to sharp surprise as she took in Sophie’s mud-stained dress, bleeding knees, and wide, terrified eyes.

"Well, well," Eleanor murmured, tossing her cigarette onto the pavement and crushing it beneath her heel. She knelt down, grabbing Sophie gently by the shoulders. "You look like you've seen a ghost, child. Or worse... Richard."

"He... he has Mrs. Gable," Sophie gasped, choking back a sob. "He’s at the boathouse. He... he confessed. He killed my real father, David. And he painted over his face on the portrait. He’s going to take everything on Monday."

Eleanor didn't look shocked. She didn't gasp or express disbelief. Instead, a grim, knowing smile touched the corners of her painted lips.

"I know, sweetheart," Eleanor said softly, pulling a small silver flash drive out of her pocket. "I’ve suspected Richard of murdering David Vance for six years. The police in this town are bought and paid for, but a public journalist with a digital recording? That’s a completely different story."

Sophie stared at her, stunned. "You... you knew?"

"I knew Richard was a gold-digging fraud the moment he married Clara," Eleanor said, her eyes flashing with a cold, unforgiving fire. "Clara came to me a week before she died, Sophie. She told me Richard had threatened her. She tried to change her will, but she didn't live long enough to sign it. Richard poisoned her slow, just like he’s trying to poison your life now."

Eleanor stood up, opening the door of her Mercedes and pulling out a heavy satellite phone.

"Now," Eleanor said, dialing a rapid sequence of numbers with absolute precision. "Let’s see how Mr. Richard handles a federal wire fraud and homicide investigation broadcast live to every news station in California before the sun comes up."
