Chapter 8 - THE NEW LEGACYThree months later, the Monterey Bay estate looked entirely different.

The dark, oppressive draperies that Richard had installed to block out the California sun had been ripped down, replaced by sheer white linen that allowed the brilliant ocean light to flood every room. The dark oak furniture remained, but the oppressive atmosphere of fear and deceit was gone for good.
In the grand dining room, where the massive family portrait once hung, a new canvas now occupied the space above the fireplace.
It was painted by a world-renowned artist commissioned by David Vance. It showed Clara smiling brightly, her hand resting warmly on David’s shoulder, while eight-year-old Sophie stood proudly in the foreground, holding a paintbrush in one hand and a silver micro-recorder in the other.
There were no hidden layers beneath this paint. No secrets. No ghosts.
Sophie stood in the center of the room, looking up at the painting with a quiet, confident smile. Her father walked up behind her, gently resting his chin on her head.
"Are you ready for your first day at your new school, sweetheart?" David asked softly.

Sophie turned around, slipping her silver-plated locket into her pocket—a small reminder of the day she tore down a lie and exposed the truth to the world.
"I'm ready for anything, Dad," Sophie said, her eyes bright and unwavering. "End of story."
