Chapter 4 - THE SAFE HOUSE

The rain lashed against the windows of the armored SUV as we sped down the dark, winding back roads away from the city. Maya was fast asleep in a portable car seat, blissfully unaware of the storm raging around her.
I held a gauze pad tightly against my surgical wound, fighting the waves of nausea and agony.
"Here," Eleanor said, handing me a small bottle of antibiotics and a bottle of water from the glove box. "Drink. You’re bleeding through your bandages, but we can't stop at a public clinic. Harrison has set up ALPR (Automated License Plate Readers) across the county."
"How deep does this go?" I asked, my voice trembling with rage. "How could Michael... how could anyone sell their own child?"
"Michael didn't look at Maya as a child," Eleanor said coldly, looking at me through the rearview mirror. "He looked at her as a financial asset. David’s entire firm is bankrupt. They defaulted on a high-interest loan from a shadow syndicate three months ago. When you got pregnant, they realized they had two assets: your mother's trust fund, which unlocks completely upon the birth of a living heir, and a black-market adoption contract with a foreign buyer."
Sarah gasped, placing her hand over her mouth. "That’s why he wanted her declared incompetent! If Emily died or was declared insane during labor, Michael becomes sole trustee of the inheritance AND sole guardian of the child!"
"Precisely," Eleanor replied. "They planned for Emily to suffer a 'fatal hemorrhage' during an emergency home birth. The ambulance was never supposed to make it to the hospital. But you fought back on the stretcher. You derailed their timeline."
The SUV pulled into a hidden driveway shrouded by dense pine trees, stopping in front of an unassuming brick safe house.
"We stay here tonight," Eleanor said, turning off the engine. "Tomorrow morning, the State Attorney General is executing a federal raid on Harrison’s precinct and David’s headquarters. But we need your testimony, Emily. And we need the original thumb drive you kept."
I froze. "What thumb drive?"
Sarah looked at me, her eyes widening. "The one Mom gave you before she passed... the one with the offshore trust passcodes?"
May you like
"I don't have it," I whispered, cold sweat breaking out across my forehead. "It was in my purse. And my purse..."
"Was left in the front seat of Michael’s car," Sarah finished, her voice dropping into sheer terror.
