Chapter 8 - THE REBIRTH

Six months later.
The summer sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my new coastal home. The sound of crashing waves provided a soft, rhythmic backdrop to the peaceful morning.
I stood on the deck, sipping hot tea, watching Sarah play with Maya on the grass. Maya was crawling now, her tiny giggles filling the fresh ocean air.
My phone chimed on the outdoor table. It was a notification from my attorney.
Case closed. The entire Vance estate has been fully liquidated to pay court-ordered restitution to you and the families of their previous victims. Your mother's inheritance has been restored in full to a private trust for Maya.
I locked the phone screen and set it down.
The scars on my body were still there. The memory of the cold ambulance stretcher, the smell of burnt rubber, and the terrifying shadow of control would always be a part of my story. But they no longer defined my future.
I walked out onto the grass, kneeling beside Sarah and picking up my daughter. Maya reached up with her tiny hands, clutching my collar, her bright blue eyes looking up at me with absolute trust and complete safety.
