Chapter 6 - THE TRAP

"Put the gun down, Michael," Eleanor’s calm, lethal voice echoed from the shadows behind him.
Michael spun around, but Eleanor was faster. A deafening gunshot echoed through the narrow hallway.
Michael screamed, dropping his weapon as a bullet pierced his shoulder. He collapsed onto the floor, clutching his wound, bleeding onto the hardwood floor.
Outside, heavy flashbang grenades exploded in the yard. Screams, shattering glass, and heavy tactical boots echoed from the driveway as the State Police Tactical Response Unit swarmed David’s vehicles.
David was dragged into the dirt, screaming curses, as federal agents cuffed him against the hood of his own car.
Inside the house, Sarah rushed forward and kicked Michael’s gun down the hallway.
I walked over to where my husband lay squirming on the floor. The man I had loved, the man I had built a life with, was reduced to a weeping coward bleeding out on a rug.
He looked up at me, tears mixing with the sweat and dirt on his face. "Emily... please... call an ambulance... I’m bleeding... remember the good times... please..."
I looked down at him, holding my daughter safely in my left arm. With my right hand, I reached down and snatched my mother's thumb drive from his trembling fingers.
"Do you remember what you told me in the intake room when I was screaming in pain?" I asked him, my voice colder than the rain outside.
Michael blinked through his pain, trembling. "What...?"
May you like
"You said: 'Don't do this right now.'"
I turned my back on him as state troopers burst through the back door, securing the room and pinning Michael to the floor with heavy combat boots.
