Chapter 2 - THE GENERAL’S RECKONINGThe temperature in the grand ballroom seemed to drop ten degrees.

Arthur Vance blinked, momentarily thrown off balance. He had expected a frightened, working-class immigrant father—perhaps an aging mechanic or a retired laborer—to show up stammering and apologizing for his daughter's behavior. Instead, he was staring down a three-star general of the United States Armed Forces, flanked by active-duty military police.

Arthur quickly recovered, forcing a tight, patronizing smile as he stood up, smoothing the lapels of his bespoke Italian suit.

"Ah," Arthur said, chuckling nervously to break the tension. "General Ortega, I presume. I must say, your daughter didn't mention you were in town. Though, I suppose marching into a private family estate with armed escorts is a bit heavy-handed for a simple domestic dispute, isn't it? This is a civil matter between family."

General Ortega did not smile. He didn't even acknowledge Arthur’s outstretched hand. He walked past the mahogany tables, his boots clicking rhythmically on the marble, until he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Valeria. He cast a brief, protective glance at the baby carrier, then turned his flinty eyes back to the patriarch.

"Family?" General Ortega repeated, the word tasting like poison in his mouth. "You don't know the meaning of the word, Arthur. You think because you sit on a pile of contaminated real estate and municipal bonds, you are royalty. You think you can humiliate a mother and her child under your roof and call it a 'domestic dispute'?"

"Now see here!" one of Arthur’s corporate cronies shouted from the back. "You can't talk to Arthur like that in his own house! Who do you think you are?"

Before General Ortega could speak, Valeria raised her hand slightly. The entire room went dead silent at the simple gesture.

Valeria unzipped her trench coat and let it slide off her shoulders, letting it drop to the floor. Beneath it, she wore a tailored, dark-olive military service uniform. On her collar gleamed the silver eagles of a full Colonel. Above her breast pocket sat ribbons from classified deployments, combat action badges, and commendations that most people only saw in classified government documentaries.

The color completely drained from Arthur Vance’s face.

Ryan staggered backward, his knees hitting the edge of a chair. "Valeria... what... what is this? A costume? You work a desk job in local government..."

"A desk job, Ryan?" Valeria stepped forward, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. "When you met me in Washington six years ago, I was returning from a twelve-month counter-terrorism deployment in the Horn of Africa. The 'administrative work' your family loves to mock? I was chief coordinator for multi-national tactical intelligence. I have briefed the Joint Chiefs of Staff while your father was busy bribing zoning commissioners to build luxury apartments on protected wetlands."

Beatrice clutched her chest, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "No... no, that’s impossible! You’re from Saltillo! You grew up in a working-class neighborhood!"

"My father worked hard to give us a safe home in America after escaping cartel violence, yes," Valeria said, her eyes locking onto Beatrice with terrifying intensity. "And I chose to serve the country that gave us refuge. Unlike your son, who has never worked a day in his life that didn't involve embezzling from his father’s trust fund, I earned every single stripe on my uniform."

Arthur swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly against the edge of the mahogany table. He tried to salvage his crumbling authority. "Colonel or not, this is a private matter! You insulted my wife, you walked out of a family function, and you showed total disrespect—"

"Disrespect?" General Ortega interrupted, stepping forward until he towered over Arthur. "Your wife placed a dog collar on my granddaughter. She mocked an innocent, defenseless infant in front of sixty witnesses to massage her own pathetic ego. In the military, we call that a hostile act. But in the real world, it’s targeted harassment and emotional abuse."

Arthur bristled, his ego refusing to back down entirely. "You can't threaten us! We have powerful friends in the state senate! We fund the Governor’s re-election campaign!"

"Oh, do you?" A cold, smooth voice echoed from the doorway.

Everyone turned. A tall, sharply dressed woman in an expensive navy blue pantsuit walked into the ballroom, holding a thick leather briefcase. Behind her walked two federal agents from the Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Division.

"Agent Miller, FBI-DOJ Joint Task Force," the woman announced, flashing a gold badge. "Mr. Arthur Vance, you and your corporate entities are currently under federal investigation for interstate wire fraud, tax evasion, and illicit municipal zoning bribery totaling over forty-eight million dollars."

The entire room erupted into absolute panic.
