Chapter 3 - THE HOUSE OF CARDS COLLAPSES"This is an outrage!" Arthur roared, his face turning a deep, dangerous shade of crimson. He pointed a shaking finger at Agent Miller. "You have no jurisdiction here! I demand to see a warrant! My lawyers will dismantle your entire department by sundown!"

Agent Miller didn't even flinch. She snapped open her leather briefcase, pulled out a stack of heavy legal documents, and slammed them onto the mahogany table right in front of Arthur.

"Federal search and seizure warrants, signed by a federal judge thirty minutes ago," Agent Miller said calmly. "Furthermore, Mr. Vance, your bank accounts, corporate assets, and offshore holdings in the Cayman Islands have been frozen effective immediately pursuant to an emergency asset forfeiture order."

Beatrice let out a high-pitched shriek and collapsed backward into an armchair, fanning herself frantically. "Arthur! Do something! Call the governor! Call someone!"

Arthur grabbed the top document, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon. His hands shook so violently that the papers fluttered against the table. "This... this is impossible. Who authorized this? Who dug this up?"

Valeria stepped forward, picking up her trench coat from the floor and folding it neatly over her arm. She looked down at her father-in-law with absolute pity.

"You spent six years investigating me, Arthur," Valeria said quietly. "You hired private investigators to dig into my family background, my childhood home in Saltillo, my friends. You thought you were compiling blackmail to ensure I stayed obedient and subservient to your family."

Ryan stared at his wife, his voice barely a whisper. "Valeria... you knew?"

"I counter-intelligence trained, Ryan," she replied, turning her gaze to her husband. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice a second-rate gumshoe sitting outside my apartment building three days after we got married? I didn't stop them. In fact, I made it easy for them. But while your father was busy looking for dirt in Mexico, my colleagues and I were looking at your family's financial ledger."

Valeria nodded toward Agent Miller. "Turns out, when you launder money through municipal construction contracts, leave digital paper trails, and bribe local politicians via shell companies, it’s not very hard for military intelligence and federal task forces to connect the dots. We didn't just find your dirty laundry, Arthur. We found the entire landfill."

"You... you set a trap," Arthur whispered, staring at Valeria as if she were a ghost.

"You built the trap, Arthur. I just walked you into it," Valeria corrected.

Chaos erupted in the ballroom. Several of the extended family members, realizing their own corporate ties to Vance Enterprises were about to be dragged down in the federal sweep, began shouting at Arthur, packing their briefcases, and rushing toward the exits. The two military police officers stationed at the door calmly blocked anyone from leaving the perimeter until federal agents had logged their identities.

Ryan fell to his knees in front of Valeria, grabbing the hem of her uniform trousers. "Valeria, please! I didn't know anything about the offshore accounts! I swear to God! I’m your husband! Think of Alma! We have a family!"

Valeria looked down at the man she had married. The man who had stood by in complete silence while his mother humiliated their newborn daughter. The man who cared more about his inheritance than his wife's dignity.

"You had a choice yesterday, Ryan," Valeria said, her voice chillingly detached. "When your mother put that collar on our daughter, you chose your mother's comfort over your child's safety. And this morning, when your father summoned us here to bully us into submission, you drove me here hoping I would just bend the knee."

She gently pulled her uniform trousers away from his grip.

"We are done, Ryan. The divorce papers will be waiting for you when the federal agents finish inventorying this house."
