Chapter 5 - THE AFTERMATH IN THE PENTAGONThree weeks later, the gray, imposing concrete walls of the Pentagon offered a stark contrast to the manicured lawns of Greenwich. Inside a high-security briefing room on the fourth floor, glowing monitors displayed satellite feeds, encrypted tactical data, and intelligence summaries from Eastern Europe and Latin America.

Colonel Valeria Ortega stood at the head of a long tactical table, her pointer resting against a high-resolution map of an active international smuggling route. Seated around the table were six senior intelligence directors and a deputy undersecretary of defense.
"As you can see," Valeria briefed, her voice crisp, authoritative, and completely commanding, "the cartel’s financial network has been severely crippled by the recent asset seizures in Connecticut and the Cayman Islands. By mapping their domestic laundering nodes, we've effectively cut off their primary logistical pipeline."
The deputy undersecretary nodded approvingly. "Brilliant work, Colonel. The inter-agency task force is calling this the most successful dismantling of a domestic-international hybrid syndicate in a decade. I understand you personally spearheaded the financial forensics?"
"Intelligence is about finding the invisible threads, sir," Valeria replied smoothly. "Once you pull the right one, the whole sweater unravels."
"Indeed," the undersecretary smiled, leaning back. "Which brings us to the personnel board's recommendation. The Joint Chiefs have reviewed your file, Colonel Ortega. We are formally nominating you for promotion to Brigadier General. Your new command will be based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State."
A murmur of respectful applause echoed around the briefing room.
Valeria stood at attention, her expression professional, though a quiet sense of vindication settled in her chest. "Thank you, sir. I am honored to accept the command."
As the meeting adjourned, Valeria gathered her tactical pads and walked down the secure corridor toward her private office. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out. It was an automated notification from her divorce attorney: Final settlement signed and executed. Vance assets liquidated. Sole custody of Alma granted to Valeria Ortega.
She slipped the phone back into her pocket, unlocked her office door, and stepped inside.
There, sitting in a sunny corner by the window, was her father, General Tomas Ortega (Ret.), holding little Alma, who was now six weeks old and babbling happily.
"Well?" her father asked, a proud grin stretching across his weathered face. "Did the Pentagon finally realize they have the best officer in the service running their intelligence division?"
Valeria smiled, walking over to kiss her daughter’s soft forehead. "Brigadier General, actually. Effective next month."

Tomas threw his head back and laughed, a rich, booming sound that filled the room. "A general's star. Your mother would have been so proud, m'hija. From Saltillo to the stars."
"We're just getting started, Dad," Valeria said, looking down at Alma, who reached out tiny, fearless fingers to grab the shiny silver eagle on her mother’s collar.
