CHAPTER 1: THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE

Everyone cried when they buried Don Ernesto Salvatierra.
His wife wore black diamonds.
His stepdaughter received condolences from Mexico’s richest families.
Two hundred guests stood silently as his coffin was lowered into the ground.
But nobody knew one thing…
The man inside that coffin was not dead.
And the old rusty key hidden in his pocket was about to destroy the family that celebrated his funeral too soon.
“Camila… don’t go back to that house.”
The whisper came from behind her.
Camila Salvatierra stopped walking.
The cemetery was almost empty now. The guests had already left in their expensive cars. The flowers were beginning to dry under the afternoon sun.
But those words froze her blood.
She slowly turned around.
It was Estela, her father’s personal nurse.
The woman looked terrified.
Not sad.
Not heartbroken.
Terrified.
“Estela… what are you talking about?”
The old nurse grabbed Camila’s arm.
Her fingers were shaking.
“Your stepmother knows you are the only person standing between her and everything she wants.”
Camila stared at her.
“What are you saying?”
Estela looked toward the black SUV waiting near the entrance.
Inside that vehicle was Úrsula Salvatierra.
The woman who had just buried her husband.
The woman who had cried louder than anyone.
The woman who had held onto the coffin and screamed:
“My love, why did you leave me?”
But now…
She was smiling.
Six months earlier, Don Ernesto Salvatierra had been a powerful man.
A businessman who built an empire from nothing.
He owned properties in Mexico City, farms in Morelos, and investments worth millions.
People respected him because he was ruthless in business but generous with his family.
Especially with his daughter, Camila.
After losing her mother when she was young, Camila became the center of his world.
Until Úrsula entered their lives.
At first, she seemed perfect.
Elegant.
Kind.
Patient.
She brought warmth back into Ernesto’s lonely house.
But after the wedding, things slowly changed.
Camila noticed small things.
Her father stopped making decisions without asking Úrsula.
His favorite foods disappeared from the kitchen.
His old friends stopped visiting.
And then came the illness.
First, it was exhaustion.
Then dizziness.
Then confusion.
Doctors said he needed more tests.
But Úrsula always had an excuse.
“He’s just getting older.”
“He needs rest.”
“Don’t make him nervous with hospitals.”
And every time Camila insisted…
Her stepmother smiled.
A strange smile.
The kind of smile someone gives when they know they have already won.
On the day before his “death,” Camila visited her father.
She found him sitting alone in his office.
He looked weaker than ever.
But his eyes were still sharp.
“Papa…”
She held his hand.
“Something is wrong. Please let me take you to another doctor.”
Ernesto looked at the locked office door.
Then he whispered:
“Camila… if anything happens to me, do not trust Úrsula.”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
But before he could explain, the door opened.
Úrsula entered.
Her smile immediately returned.
“What are you two whispering about?”
Ernesto became silent.
That was the moment Camila realized something.
Her father wasn’t just sick.
He was afraid.
The funeral had been a performance.
A perfectly planned show.
Úrsula cried.
Jimena cried.
Everyone believed the grieving widow and daughter.
But Estela knew the truth.
That was why, after the burial, she pulled Camila away.
“Your father left something for you.”
Camila frowned.
“What?”
Estela reached inside her coat and removed a small envelope.
Old.
Yellow.
Sealed with wax.
On the front were only four words:
FOR CAMILA. AFTER MY DEATH.
Camila’s hands trembled.
“He wrote this before he died?”
Estela looked away.
“No.”
Her voice became softer.
“He wrote it before everyone thought he died.”
Inside the envelope was a photograph.
Camila stared at it.
Her father.
Standing beside a young man she didn’t recognize.
And behind them…
A house.
An old mansion hidden in the mountains.
On the back of the photo, Ernesto had written:
THE PLACE WHERE THE TRUTH IS STILL ALIVE.
Then there was something else.
A small object wrapped in cloth.
A key.
An old iron key covered with scratches.
Camila looked confused.
“What does this open?”
Estela swallowed.
“Your grandfather’s abandoned house.”
Camila’s face went pale.
“That place has been empty for twenty years.”
Estela looked directly into her eyes.
“No, Camila.”
She whispered:
“It has been hiding someone for twenty years.”
The old Tsuru drove through the mountains for almost an hour.
Neither woman spoke.
Camila’s mind was full of questions.
Why fake his death?
Why hide?
Why trust only her?
When they arrived, the abandoned mansion appeared exactly as she remembered.
Broken windows.
Dead flowers.
Dust everywhere.
But then Camila noticed something strange.
Smoke.
Coming from the chimney.
Someone was living there.
Her heart started racing.
“Estela…”
The nurse didn’t answer.
She unlocked the front door.
Inside was impossible.
The house was clean.
Fresh food was on the table.
A fire was burning.
And on the wall…
Were dozens of photographs.
Photographs of Úrsula.
Jimena.
And other people Camila had never seen before.
But then she heard a sound.
A wheelchair moving.
Slowly.
From the darkness.
Someone appeared.
An old man.
Thin.
Pale.
Covered with a blanket.
Camila dropped the envelope.
Because she recognized those eyes.
Those hands.
That voice.
“Mi niña…”
Her entire body froze.
“Papa?”
The man looked at her.
Tears filled his eyes.
“I’m sorry, daughter.”
Camila covered her mouth.
“No…”
“No, this isn’t possible.”
The man reached toward her.
“I had to let them believe I was dead.”
“Because if they knew I survived…”
His voice broke.
“They would finish what they started.”
Camila fell to her knees.
Her father was alive.
The man everyone had buried.
The man whose funeral had just ended.
Was standing in front of her.
Alive.
But before she could ask anything…
Ernesto grabbed her hand.
“Camila, listen carefully.”
“Your stepmother didn’t kill me.”
Camila looked confused.
“Then who did?”
Her father pointed toward the photographs on the wall.
One picture was circled in red.
A picture of a young woman.
Camila recognized her immediately.
Her mother.
But beside her mother…
Was another person.
Someone Camila had never expected.
Someone who was supposed to be dead.
Her grandfather.
Ernesto whispered:
“The person who destroyed our family twenty years ago…”
“Is the same person helping Úrsula steal everything from me today.”
Camila stared at the photo.
Her blood ran cold.
Because underneath it was written one sentence:
THE REAL HEIR OF THE SALVATIERRA FAMILY IS STILL ALIVE.
