CHAPTER 4: THE MAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Camila stared at the photograph on her phone.
A man.
Older.
Gray hair.
A face she had never seen before.
But somehow…
A face that felt strangely familiar.
Underneath the picture were six words that destroyed everything she believed:
“YOUR FATHER IS STILL ALIVE.”
Her hands began to shake.
She looked at Don Ernesto.
The man who had raised her.
The man who had protected her.
The man who had just admitted that he wasn’t her biological father.
“Papa…”
Her voice was barely audible.
“Is this true?”
Ernesto couldn’t look at her.
And that silence hurt more than any answer.
Camila’s eyes filled with tears.
“For twenty-eight years… did you know?”
Ernesto closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The word hit her like a knife.
“Yes?”
She stepped back.
“You knew my real father was alive?”
“I knew he might be alive.”
“Might be?”
Camila laughed bitterly.
A broken laugh.
“You let me believe I lost everyone.”
Ernesto’s face collapsed.
“I was trying to save you.”
“From what?”
Before Ernesto could answer…
A voice interrupted.
“From me.”
Everyone turned.
Standing at the entrance of the mansion was Úrsula.
But she was no longer smiling.
She looked different.
The mask had fallen.
No fake sadness.
No fake kindness.
Only anger.
“Your father was always weak, Camila.”
She pointed at Ernesto.
“He thought hiding the truth would protect you.”
She laughed.
“But secrets don’t disappear.”
“They rot.”
Camila looked between them.
“You all knew.”
Her voice trembled.
“My whole life was a lie.”
“No,” Ernesto said immediately.
“You were the only real thing in my life.”
Camila looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Because he had no answer.
And that was the answer.
Suddenly, the sound of police sirens echoed outside.
Everyone froze.
Úrsula looked toward the window.
For the first time…
She looked nervous.
“What did you do?” Jimena asked.
Her mother turned sharply.
“Be quiet.”
Camila noticed something.
Jimena wasn’t as confident as before.
She wasn’t enjoying this.
She looked scared.
“Jimena…”
Camila whispered.
“Were you part of this?”
Her stepsister looked away.
A tear rolled down her face.
“I didn’t know it would go this far.”
Úrsula stared at her daughter.
“You ungrateful child.”
Jimena flinched.
And suddenly Camila understood.
Jimena wasn’t the mastermind.
She was another victim.
The front doors opened.
Several officers entered.
But behind them…
Was someone else.
Someone nobody expected.
A man in his late sixties.
Walking slowly.
Using a wooden cane.
Everyone became silent.
Because the man from the photograph…
Was standing in front of them.
Alive.
Ricardo Salvatierra.
Camila couldn’t move.
She looked at him.
Then at Ernesto.
Then back at Ricardo.
No one spoke.
Finally, Ricardo looked at her.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Camila…”
Hearing her name from his mouth felt strange.
Too familiar.
Too painful.
“Don’t call me that.”
Her voice cracked.
“You don’t get to appear after twenty-eight years and act like my father.”
Ricardo lowered his head.
“I know.”
A painful silence followed.
“I know I have no right.”
“Then why did you leave?”
The question came out full of anger.
Ricardo looked at Ernesto.
And then at Úrsula.
“Because someone wanted me dead.”
Everyone looked at Úrsula.
She didn’t deny it.
Instead…
She smiled.
“You people are unbelievable.”
Úrsula laughed.
“You spent twenty years chasing ghosts.”
She walked toward the table.
“Do you really think I would let some old family secret destroy everything I built?”
Ernesto frowned.
“What did you do?”
Úrsula reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Yellow.
Camila immediately recognized it.
Another envelope.
Like the one her father had left her.
“This belonged to Elena.”
Camila froze.
“My mother?”
Úrsula smiled.
“She wrote it the night she discovered the truth.”
Ricardo’s expression changed.
“Where did you get that?”
Úrsula looked at him.
“From the person who helped me hide everything.”
Camila’s heart raced.
“Who?”
Úrsula looked toward Ernesto.
And said:
“Ask your husband.”
Everyone became silent.
Camila looked confused.
“Your husband?”
Úrsula smiled.
“Your father’s death wasn’t the first thing Ernesto lied about.”
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
A letter written by Elena.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Camila recognized it immediately.
Her mother’s handwriting.
Úrsula began reading.
“If something happens to me, I need Camila to know the truth…”
Everyone froze.
Then she continued.
“The person who betrayed me was not Ricardo.”
A pause.
“It was the man I trusted most.”
Camila slowly turned toward Ernesto.
Her father looked completely broken.
“No…”
She whispered.
“No, this isn’t possible.”
Úrsula smiled.
“Oh, it is.”
She placed the letter on the table.
And the final sentence was visible.
A sentence that changed everything:
“Ernesto killed the man I loved… and stole my daughter’s identity.”
Camila stared at her father.
The man who raised her.
The man she trusted.
The man who had pretended to save her.
Suddenly, she didn’t know who the enemy was anymore.
The room became silent.
Then Ernesto whispered:
“Camila…”
But she stepped away.
Because for the first time in her life…
She was afraid of him.
Outside, the rain started pouring.
And somewhere in Mexico City…
A second envelope was opened.
Inside was a document with one name written on it.
The person who had secretly controlled the Salvatierra family for twenty years.
The person even Úrsula feared.
