CHAPTER 5: THE FINAL SECRET BURIED WITH ELENA

The rain fell harder.

Heavy drops hit the windows of the abandoned mansion like thousands of tiny knocks from the past.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because one sentence had destroyed everything Camila believed:

“Ernesto killed the man I loved… and stole my daughter’s identity.”

Camila stared at the letter.

Then at Ernesto.

The man who had held her hand when she was sick.

The man who had waited outside her school.

The man who had taught her how to ride a bicycle.

The man she called Papa.

Her heart wanted to believe him.

But her mind was screaming.

“Tell me it’s a lie.”

Her voice broke.

“Please.”

Ernesto looked at her.

And the pain in his eyes was worse than anger.

“Camila…”

“Tell me she is lying!”

The old man lowered his head.

And that silence almost destroyed her.

Úrsula smiled.

She had been waiting twenty years for this moment.

“You see?”

She whispered.

“He always knew how to play the victim.”

Ricardo stepped forward.

“Enough.”

His voice was cold.

“You don’t get to pretend you are innocent.”

Úrsula turned toward him.

“Really?”

She laughed.

“The man who disappeared for twenty years wants to talk about innocence?”

Ricardo clenched his fists.

Because every word was a wound.

Camila looked at Ricardo.

“Then tell me the truth.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Why did you leave me?”

The old man looked at her.

And for the first time…

He looked like a broken father.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.”

“Everyone says that.”

Camila shook her head.

“Everyone says they protected me.”

She pointed at the three people standing in front of her.

“But all of you took my life away from me.”

Nobody answered.

Because she was right.

Ricardo slowly walked toward the table.

He picked up Elena’s letter.

“Your mother discovered something before she died.”

“What?”

“She found out that the Salvatierra inheritance was not stolen by my father.”

He looked at Ernesto.

“It was stolen by someone inside our own house.”

Camila looked confused.

“But Úrsula said…”

Ricardo interrupted.

“Úrsula is a liar.”

He looked at the woman.

“But this time, she is telling part of the truth.”

Everyone became silent.

Camila frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Ricardo took a deep breath.

“It means Ernesto didn’t kill your mother.”

Camila looked at him.

“But he hid the truth.”

Ernesto closed his eyes.

Twenty years ago…

Elena discovered that someone had forged the inheritance documents.

She followed the money trail.

She found secret accounts.

Fake signatures.

Hidden properties.

And finally…

She found the name of the person behind everything.

But before she could expose them…

Her car crashed on a mountain road.

Everyone believed it was an accident.

But it wasn’t.

The brakes had been cut.

And the person responsible…

Was someone nobody suspected.

“Who?” Camila whispered.

Ricardo looked at Úrsula.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

Not Úrsula.

Someone else.

Ricardo continued:

“The person who ordered Elena’s death was not Úrsula.”

Úrsula’s face changed.

For the first time…

She looked genuinely afraid.

“Stop.”

Ricardo ignored her.

“It was the person who trained Úrsula.”

Camila felt a chill.

“What are you talking about?”

Ricardo looked toward the old documents on the table.

Then said:

“Your grandmother.”

Silence.

Complete silence.

Camila’s breathing stopped.

“My grandmother died fifteen years ago.”

Ricardo nodded.

“Yes.”

“But…”

“She wasn’t working alone.”

He opened another document.

A bank transfer.

A name.

A signature.

Camila moved closer.

And when she saw it…

Her entire body froze.

Because the signature belonged to someone who was supposed to be her protector.

Someone who attended her birthday parties.

Someone who hugged her when she cried.

Someone who had always called her “my little girl.”

“Impossible…”

Camila whispered.

Ernesto looked at her sadly.

“I tried to tell you.”

She turned toward him.

“No.”

Her voice became cold.

“You don’t get to say that.”

“Because you knew.”

“You knew everyone was lying.”

“You knew my mother was murdered.”

“And you still chose silence.”

Ernesto’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.”

Camila laughed bitterly.

“My whole life was destroyed because everyone was afraid.”

Suddenly…

The lights went out.

The mansion became completely dark.

A second later…

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The sound came from the old wooden desk.

A phone that nobody had seen before.

Ricardo slowly picked it up.

“Hello?”

A distorted voice answered.

But everyone could hear it.

Especially Camila.

Because the voice said:

“Congratulations, Ernesto.”

“You found the truth.”

A pause.

“But you made one mistake.”

Ernesto grabbed the phone.

“Who are you?”

The person laughed.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Camila felt her blood run cold.

Then the voice continued:

“Because now I have no reason to spare your daughter.”

The call ended.

Everyone looked at Camila.

She suddenly noticed something.

The old key her father had left her…

Was missing.

Her hand went to her pocket.

Empty.

Someone had taken it.

And then…

A message appeared on her phone.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence:

“The key was never meant to open a door.”

A second message arrived.

“It was meant to reveal who killed your mother.”

Camila looked up.

Because outside the mansion…

A figure was standing in the rain.

Watching them.

Holding the old key.

And when lightning flashed…

Camila recognized the face.

A face she had seen only once before.

In an old family photograph.

A person everyone believed was dead.
