CHAPTER 2: THE HEIR WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

The words on the old photograph haunted Camila all night.

“THE REAL HEIR OF THE SALVATIERRA FAMILY IS STILL ALIVE.”

She stared at the sentence until her eyes burned.

Her father, Don Ernesto, sat across from her in the abandoned mansion, looking like a ghost who had returned from the grave.

A man who had been declared dead.

A man whose funeral had been attended by two hundred people.

A man whose wife had already started celebrating her inheritance.

But now…

He was alive.

And he was telling Camila that everything she knew about her family was a lie.

“Papa…” Camila whispered.

Her voice trembled.

“What does this mean?”

Ernesto looked at the photograph again.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he closed his eyes.

“Your mother knew the truth.”

Camila froze.

“My mother?”

She hadn’t heard that name connected to a secret in years.

Her mother, Elena, had died when Camila was only seven years old.

Everyone said it was a tragic accident.

A car crash on a rainy night.

A story nobody questioned.

But now…

For the first time in twenty years…

Her father looked afraid.

“Your mother didn’t die because of an accident.”

The room became silent.

Camila felt like the air had disappeared.

“What are you saying?”

Ernesto looked at her with tears in his eyes.

“I spent twenty years trying to protect you from the truth.”

Camila stepped back.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“No, Papa. Don’t tell me my whole life has been a lie.”

Ernesto lowered his gaze.

“Your mother discovered something about my family.”

“What?”

“The original Salvatierra inheritance.”

Camila frowned.

“I don’t understand.”

Her father slowly moved his wheelchair closer to the table.

On it were documents, old photographs, and handwritten letters.

“Before I built my company, before I became wealthy, my father owned land worth millions.”

He opened an old file.

“But when he died, almost everything disappeared.”

Camila looked at the papers.

“Someone stole it?”

Ernesto nodded.

“Someone inside the family.”

Twenty years ago…

Before Úrsula.

Before Jimena.

Before the funeral.

There was another betrayal.

Ernesto’s younger brother, Ricardo, was supposed to inherit part of the family fortune.

But when their father died, the documents changed.

The properties went to Ernesto.

Ricardo received nothing.

Everyone believed Ricardo was simply unlucky.

A bitter man who disappeared after losing everything.

But Elena, Camila’s mother, discovered something shocking.

The inheritance documents had been forged.

And the person behind it…

Was not Ricardo.

It was someone much closer.

Someone nobody suspected.

“Who was it?” Camila asked.

Her father looked at her.

And for the first time, she saw hatred in his eyes.

“Your grandmother.”

Camila stepped back.

“My grandmother?”

“Yes.”

Ernesto’s voice cracked.

“She wanted control of everything. She erased Ricardo from the family history and created a fake inheritance.”

“But why?”

“Because Ricardo had a son.”

Camila’s heart started beating faster.

“A son?”

Ernesto nodded.

“The true first heir.”

Before Camila could respond, a loud noise came from outside.

A car door slammed.

Then another.

Ernesto immediately turned pale.

“They found us.”

Camila looked toward the window.

“What?”

Estela rushed into the room.

“Someone followed us.”

The fear on her face said everything.

Camila moved toward the curtain.

Outside, two black SUVs were parked near the mansion.

And standing beside them…

Was Jimena.

Her stepsister.

The same woman who had cried at her father’s funeral.

The same woman who had held her mother’s arm.

The same woman who had smiled while discussing the inheritance.

But she wasn’t alone.

Beside her stood a man Camila had never seen before.

A tall man wearing a black coat.

He looked toward the mansion.

Then smiled.

Inside the house, Ernesto grabbed Camila’s hand.

“Listen to me carefully.”

His voice became urgent.

“If they enter this house, you cannot tell them you found me.”

“Why?”

“Because the person controlling them is someone you trust.”

Camila felt a chill.

“Who?”

Her father looked at her.

Before he could answer…

The front door shook.

BANG.

Someone was knocking.

Not politely.

Violently.

“Mr. Salvatierra!”

A man’s voice echoed through the mansion.

“We know you are inside.”

Camila’s face turned pale.

How could they know?

How could anyone know?

Then her phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence:

“Ask your father why your mother begged him to leave you with another family before she died.”

Camila stared at the screen.

Her hands started shaking.

“What is this?”

Her father looked at the message.

And his expression changed completely.

Because he knew exactly who sent it.

“Papa…”

Camila whispered.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

Ernesto closed his eyes.

Then said something that destroyed everything she believed about her childhood.

“Your mother didn’t abandon you.”

A pause.

“She was trying to save you.”

Camila’s eyes filled with tears.

“Save me from who?”

Her father looked toward the door.

The knocking became louder.

Then he whispered:

“From the same person who just came here to kill us.”

The door finally broke open.

Footsteps entered the mansion.

Slow.

Confident.

Coming closer.

Camila hid behind the wall with her father and Estela.

Then she heard a familiar voice.

A voice she never expected.

A voice from her own family.

“Ernesto…”

A woman laughed softly.

“You really thought you could disappear forever?”

Camila froze.

Because that voice belonged to…

ÚRSULA.

Her stepmother.

The woman who had cried at his funeral.

The woman who had worn black for everyone to see.

The woman who had pretended to be a grieving widow.

She walked into the room holding a gun.

And behind her stood Jimena.

Smiling.

Úrsula looked around the mansion.

Then said:

“Come out, husband.”

“You already died once.”

She smiled coldly.

“This time, I’m making sure you stay buried.”
