CHAPTER 3 – The Truth That Destroyed Two Families
Emily refused.
Instead, she shoved the documents into her backpack and ran through the back door as the men stormed inside.
Thomas delayed them just long enough for her to escape into the pouring rain.
By dawn, Emily was on the first flight to Seattle.
She found Grace living under another name—Anna Brooks—a respected high school art teacher who had spent her entire life believing she had been abandoned at birth.
When Emily revealed the photograph of the twins, Grace laughed in disbelief.
Then Emily showed her the birth certificate.
The music box.
And Eleanor's letter.
Grace collapsed into tears.
For the first time in fifty years, two branches of the same family embraced each other.
But the biggest shock was still waiting.
Grace unlocked an old wooden box she had kept since childhood.
Inside was a DNA test she had secretly taken years earlier while trying to discover her origins.
She handed Emily the results.
The biological father wasn't Victor Hale.
Emily frowned.
"Then... who is?"
Grace pointed to another name.
Thomas Reed.
Emily froze.
The gentle old man who had guided her...
Had lied.
Victor Hale had fabricated the scandal to protect his political career, while Thomas had agreed to remain silent, believing Grace would have a safer life away from public disgrace.
He had sacrificed thirty years with his daughter out of fear.
Ashamed, Thomas arrived in Seattle days later, expecting hatred.
Instead, Grace hugged him.
"We've already lost thirty years."
"I'm not losing another day."
Months later, the Carter farmhouse was transformed into a family museum.
Hidden inside the restored attic, Emily placed Eleanor's final letter in a glass display.
Beneath it, she added one sentence:
"The greatest family tragedies aren't caused by death... but by the lies people tell to protect the ones they love."
The opening ceremony drew hundreds of visitors.
Among them stood Thomas, Grace, Emily, and three generations of a family that had finally become whole again.
