CHAPTER 8 – The DNA Test That Changed Everything

The room fell into stunned silence.

Emily stared at Lily, searching the little girl's face for some sign that she had misunderstood.

"You... what did you just say?" Emily whispered.

Lily tightened her grip on the old teddy bear.

"My daddy told me never to tell anyone unless I was safe."

Grace knelt beside her.

"Sweetheart... who was your father?"

Lily reached into her backpack and pulled out a worn photograph.

It showed a smiling man in his late thirties standing beside Lily in front of a small fishing cabin.

Thomas gasped.

"I know him."

Emily looked up.

"You do?"

Thomas nodded slowly.

"His name was Daniel Morgan."

"He worked as Robert Carter's accountant over twenty years ago."

Grace frowned.

"But why would Daniel say Robert was Lily's grandfather?"

Thomas looked pale.

"Because Daniel discovered something... and then he disappeared."

Emily's stomach tightened.

"You mean... he didn't die in an accident?"

Thomas shook his head.

"I always thought the crash looked staged."

Before anyone could speak, Emily received a phone call.

It was Detective Laura Bennett.

"We've reopened Daniel Morgan's case."

"What we found changes everything."

Emily put the call on speaker.

"The brakes on Daniel's car were deliberately cut."

Grace covered her mouth.

"So someone murdered him..."

The detective continued.

"We also found a sealed envelope in the evidence locker that was never logged."

"It contained a DNA report."

Emily's heartbeat thundered.

"Whose DNA?"

There was a long pause.

Then Detective Bennett answered.

"Robert Carter."

"And Lily."

Everyone froze.

Emily whispered,

"So... Lily really is Robert's granddaughter."

But the detective wasn't finished.

"There's one more name on the report."

"Daniel Morgan..."

"...was not Lily's biological father."

The room spun.

Lily looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Grace pulled the little girl into her arms.

"It means Daniel loved you enough to raise you as his own."

Tears rolled down Thomas's face.

"So who is her real father?"

Just then, another envelope slipped from the old teddy bear.

No one had noticed it before.

Inside was a single ultrasound photo.

Written on the back, in faded blue ink, were eight chilling words:

"Forgive me... Robert can never know about him."

Emily turned the paper over.

A name was written underneath.

Michael Carter.

Emily's eyes widened.

Michael Carter...

was her own father.

Silence crashed over the room.

Grace looked at Emily in disbelief.

"No..."

Emily's hands began to shake violently.

"If this is true..."

"...then Lily isn't just my cousin."

The detective quietly finished the sentence.

"No, Emily."

"According to the DNA report..."

"Lily is your half-sister."

The teddy bear slipped from Lily's hands and hit the wooden floor.

For a moment...

No one moved.

No one breathed.
