Chapter 4 - THE TWIST IN THE WILL

Clara felt the air leave her lungs. She backed away from the freezer, her hands shaking violently as she stared at the photograph of herself and little Lily.

"Why do you have pictures of my daughter?" Clara choked out, her voice rising in panic. "What is this?! What are you doing to me?!"

Victor didn't answer immediately. He stepped into the freezer, grabbed the black duffel bag, and zipped it closed. When he turned back to her, the dark, menacing aura he had cultivated seemed to collapse, revealing a man utterly hollowed out by fear.

"I didn't put that picture here, Clara," Victor said, his voice raw. "If I wanted to hurt you or your daughter, I wouldn't leave a trail in my own home."

"Then who did?!" Clara screamed. "Who is playing this sick game?!"

"The person who actually controls this house," Victor replied bitterly. "The person who has been bleeding me dry for three years."

He walked past her, gesturing for her to follow him back upstairs. He led her not to the grand dining room, but into his private study—a heavy, wood-paneled room lined with thousands of leather-bound books and equipped with state-of-the-art security monitors.

Victor locked the heavy door, walked over to a safe hidden behind an oil painting, and pulled out a thick legal document. He tossed it onto his desk in front of Clara.

"Read the last page," he commanded.

Clara reluctantly approached the desk. She flipped through the dense legal jargon until her eyes hit the final section: THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ELEANOR VANE-HALE.

Her eyes scanned the bold text:

"In the event of my death or permanent incapacitation, full control of the Hale Family Trust, valued at $4.2 Billion, along with legal guardianship of my four sons, shall NOT revert to my husband, Victor Hale. Full custody and control shall be held in escrow by my brother, DEREK VANE, until the quadruplets reach the age of twenty-one."

Clara stared at the name on the page. The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

"Derek... Vane?" she whispered, her blood running ice-cold.

"My late wife’s brother," Victor said, his eyes dark with malice. "A ruthless, degenerate gambler who has spent the last five years trying to ruin me. Do you know him?"

Clara’s heart stopped. "Derek Vane... is my ex-husband."

The study went dead silent.

Victor slowly sat down in his leather armchair, staring at Clara as if seeing her for the very first time. "Your ex-husband? The man trying to take your daughter?"

"Yes," Clara gasped, tears of shock welling in her eyes. "He... he told me he worked in finance! He told me his family was dead! He changed his last name to Bennett when we got married, then changed it back when we divorced!"

"He lied to you," Victor said softly, the dots finally connecting in his brilliant mind. "Derek didn't marry you by accident, Clara. He married you seven years ago because he knew who you were. He knew you were related to the original architects who built this estate. He knew you had access to things no one else did."

"I don't understand!" Clara cried out, clutching her head. "I'm just a broke school teacher! I don't have access to anything!"

"You do now," Victor said, pointing to the window overlooking the estate gates.

Outside, a black town car had pulled up to the security checkpoint. The gates swung open automatically.

Victor’s phone chimed with a security alert. He picked it up and looked at the screen.

"Derek is here," Victor said, his voice grim. "He’s coming for his monthly inspection of the boys. And if he finds out you're here working for me... he won't just take your daughter, Clara. He'll destroy us both."
