Chapter 6 - THE MIDNIGHT TRAP

The revelation hit Clara like a physical blow.
"Eleanor is alive?" Clara breathed, her mind spinning uncontrollably. "Then... then who was in the rain slicker last night? Who cut Theo?"
"Derek’s accomplices," Victor said, walking over to his desk and pulling up a hidden grid of security feeds on his computer screen. "Derek has been sending people into this house for months, trying to find Eleanor’s hidden safe. He needs her original hand-written diary. It’s the only proof that he was slowly slipping arsenic into her food to steal her inheritance."
"Where is the diary?" Clara asked.
Victor looked at her gravely. "Eleanor hid it somewhere in this house before she lost her mind. She told me only one thing before I had to fly her out of the country for her own safety: 'The key is with the boys.'"
Clara’s mind raced back to her first night—the four terrifying, chaotic quadruplets.
Mason making the last nanny cry. Cole throwing fruit. Ryder building a cereal fort. And Theo... quiet, observant Theo, who had helped her cook carbonara.
"Theo," Clara gasped. "When Theo cut his hand last night outside the locked room... he wasn't trying to open the door. He was trying to hide something!"
Without another word, Clara turned and ran up the grand staircase toward the quadruplets' bedroom wing.
She pushed open the heavy door to the boys' quarters. The four six-year-olds were sitting in a circle on the floor, strangely quiet. In the center of the circle lay four matching wooden toy chests that had belonged to them since they were toddlers.
"Clara," Theo said, standing up timidly. "Is the bad man gone?"
Clara walked over and knelt in front of the four boys. For the first time, she didn't see tiny monsters or spoiled rich kids. She saw four terrified children who had been weaponized by an evil uncle to tear their own father down.
"He's gone for now, Theo," Clara said gently, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Boys... I need your help. I need to save my little girl, Lily. And to do that, I need to know what your mother gave you before she went away."
the four boys looked at each other.
Mason, the self-proclaimed leader, stepped forward. He reached under his bed and pulled out a small, tarnished silver lockbox.
"Mom told us never to open this until a nanny stayed for dinner without yelling," Mason said softly, his brave front completely dropping. "She said real nannies yell... but a guardian stays quiet and cooks."
Clara’s eyes filled with tears. Eleanor Hale had anticipated everything. She knew Derek would send fake nannies, fake caretakers, and saboteurs to dismantle the family from the inside. She needed someone genuine—someone who cared more about the children than the chaos—to find the truth.
Mason handed Clara the key that Theo had been clutching the night his hand was cut.
Clara inserted the bloody brass key into the lockbox. It turned with a sharp CLICK.
Inside the box lay a small, black leather-bound diary, a flash drive, and a handwritten letter addressed to: TO THE WOMAN WHO SAVES MY BOYS.
Before Clara could open the letter, the house’s automated fire alarms began to blare violently.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Red emergency lights flashed throughout the hallway. The smell of thick, acrid smoke began to pour in through the air vents.
Downstairs, the heavy iron security shutters slammed down over all the windows and doors, sealing the entire estate in total lockdown.

From the hallway speakers, a digitized, cruel voice echoed throughout the mansion:
"You shouldn't have opened the box, Clara. Now, you and the boys burn together."
