CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL WITH THE BROKEN VIOLIN

The laughter started before she even reached the center of the stage.

The enormous concert hall was packed with thousands of spectators. Bright spotlights illuminated every corner of the stage as cameras broadcast the national music competition live across the country.

The audience had already witnessed breathtaking performances from talented young musicians.

Then came contestant number seventeen.

A thin teenage girl named Lily Harper.

She looked completely out of place.

Her dress was faded.

Her shoes were worn.

And in her trembling hands was an ancient violin that looked as if it could fall apart at any second.

Whispers spread through the crowd.

"Is that a joke?"

"Where did she find that thing?"

"It belongs in a trash can."

Even the host struggled to hide his amusement.

"Are you seriously planning to perform with that violin?" he asked.

Lily nodded.

"Yes, sir."

The audience laughed.

One judge adjusted his glasses and shook his head.

"I've seen better-looking instruments hanging on restaurant walls."

More laughter erupted.

Lily's cheeks burned red.

For a moment she considered turning around and walking away.

She wasn't used to crowds.

She wasn't used to people looking at her.

But she had not come this far to quit.

Not after everything.

Not after her grandfather.

The old violin wasn't just an instrument.

It was all she had left of him.

Three years earlier, Lily's grandfather, Benjamin Harper, had passed away after a long illness.

He had been a street musician.

Never famous.

Never wealthy.

But he had taught Lily everything he knew about music.

Before he died, he handed her the violin.

"It isn't valuable to the world," he had whispered.

"But one day, you'll make it valuable."

Those were the last words he ever spoke.

Since then, Lily practiced every day.

Before school.

After school.

Late into the night.

Sometimes her fingers bled.

Sometimes she cried from exhaustion.

But she never stopped.

Because every note she played felt like a conversation with the grandfather she missed every single day.

The host finally stepped aside.

"Well, let's hear what this miracle violin can do."

The crowd chuckled.

Lily slowly raised the instrument.

Her hands were shaking.

The room waited.

Some people smirked.

Others prepared to laugh again.

Then Lily drew the bow across the strings.

And the entire hall fell silent.

One note.

Just one.

Yet it sounded unlike anything anyone had heard all evening.

The tone was rich.

Deep.

Beautiful.

It seemed impossible that such a sound could come from such an old instrument.

The judges exchanged confused looks.

The audience stopped laughing.

Lily closed her eyes.

And began to play.

May you like

No one realized it yet.

But the performance that was about to unfold would change her life forever.
