CHAPTER 1 — THE BRIDE WHO ESCAPED HER OWN WEDDING

At 2:47 a.m., someone hammered on my front door so violently I thought the house was under attack.

When I opened it, my daughter collapsed into my arms.

Her white wedding gown was stained with blood.

One high heel was missing.

Her veil had been ripped away.

Finger-shaped bruises wrapped around both of her wrists.

She wasn't crying.

She looked... empty.

"Dad..." she whispered.

"They tried to make me disappear."

Every hair on my body stood up.

Hours earlier I had walked Amelia down the aisle.

She had looked happier than I'd ever seen her.

Now she looked like a woman who had survived a nightmare.

I carried her inside and wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

For several minutes she couldn't speak.

Then she finally looked at me.

"It wasn't just Ethan."

My heart sank.

"It was his whole family."

After the wedding reception, Ethan told her they had one final surprise before leaving for their honeymoon.

Instead of driving to the airport, they arrived at his family's enormous estate.

The gates closed behind them.

The security guards locked every entrance.

Inside the mansion waited his parents...

His two brothers...

Three lawyers...

And a thick stack of legal documents.

Ethan smiled.

"You only need one signature."

She looked down.

Every document transferred every asset she owned...

Her apartment.

Her investments.

Her late mother's inheritance.

Everything.

She laughed.

Thinking it was a joke.

No one laughed back.

His mother stepped closer.

"In this family," she said softly,

"wives don't own anything."

When Amelia refused...

The smile disappeared.

The first slap came so fast she never saw it.

Then another.

And another.

Someone grabbed her hair.

Someone locked every door.

One of the lawyers calmly collected the unsigned papers while pretending nothing was happening.

They kept saying the same sentence.

"She'll sign eventually."

Hours passed.

Every refusal brought another punishment.

Until Ethan leaned close and whispered...

"If you love me...

prove it."

That was the moment Amelia realized...

There had never been a marriage.

Only a carefully planned robbery.

May you like

But none of them noticed one small detail.

Her smartwatch had never stopped recording.
