CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN THEY SHOULD NEVER HAVE CHALLENGED

I didn't call the police immediately.
Instead...
I called one man.
My older brother.
Nathan Cole.
Former federal prosecutor.
Current head of one of the country's largest financial crime divisions.
He answered on the second ring.
"I need you."
Twenty minutes later he walked through my front door carrying a laptop.
Amelia handed him the smartwatch.
He pressed play.
The room fell silent.
Every threat.
Every slap.
Every signature demand.
Every face.
Every voice.
Perfectly recorded.
Nathan paused the video.
"They're finished."
I frowned.
"It's assault."
He shook his head.
"No."
"It's much bigger."
He enlarged one frame from the recording.
On the table behind the contracts sat several folders.
One logo caught his eye.
A shell corporation.
Nathan recognized the company immediately.
Federal investigators had been searching for it for nearly four years.
The same company connected to luxury real estate fraud...
Money laundering...
And dozens of missing inheritances.
The wedding had never been about Amelia.
She was simply their newest victim.
Nathan smiled for the first time.
"They just confessed to organized financial crimes on camera."
Before sunrise...
Federal agents began obtaining emergency warrants.
Bank accounts froze.
Private jets were grounded.
Luxury vehicles were tracked.
Every property connected to Ethan's family entered federal review.
Meanwhile...
Ethan kept texting Amelia.
"Come home."
"My parents were only trying to protect our future."
"You overreacted."
She never replied.
Instead...
She watched the live news.
"Prominent Real Estate Dynasty Under Federal Investigation."
His mother's face appeared on every television screen.
For the first time in decades...
She looked terrified.
But the greatest surprise was still waiting.
Nathan received one final phone call.
Then slowly smiled.
"They found another victim."
May you like
"No," the detective corrected.
"They found thirty-eight."
