CHAPTER 4 – The Man Who Couldn't Stop Staring at Emma

The story should have ended there.

Everyone believed Ethan's final promise had been fulfilled.

But fate wasn't finished.

As the guests slowly began leaving the school gym, a black SUV pulled into the parking lot.

Its tinted windows reflected the flashing lights from the street.

A tall man stepped out.

Nearly fifty years old.

Expensive tailored suit.

Silver hair at his temples.

A face that seemed carved from stone.

The moment he saw Emma laughing with the firefighters, he froze.

His breathing became uneven.

"No..."

he whispered.

"It can't be..."

Inside the gym, Claire didn't notice him.

But Daniel did.

His expression instantly changed.

"What are you doing here?"

The stranger looked at Daniel with haunted eyes.

"I only found out yesterday."

Daniel stepped between him and Emma.

"You have no right."

"I know."

The man's voice cracked.

"I've spent seven years with no right."

Claire finally turned.

The stranger slowly removed his sunglasses.

The color drained from her face.

"Richard?"

Emma looked back and forth between them.

"Mama... who is he?"

Claire couldn't answer.

Because Richard Sullivan wasn't just any man.

He was Ethan's biological father.

Emma's grandfather.

The grandfather who had rejected his own son twenty-five years earlier.

The wealthy businessman who had once told Ethan...

"If you marry that poor waitress and have that child...

don't ever call me your father again."

Ethan had walked away.

He never asked for another dollar.

Never called again.

Richard had buried himself in business.

Built a billion-dollar company.

Collected awards.

Bought mansions.

But every success only made the silence louder.

Then, three days earlier...

Daniel had finally found him.

Not to ask for money.

Not for sympathy.

Only to deliver Ethan's final message.

Richard reached into his jacket pocket.

He carefully unfolded an old photograph.

It showed Ethan holding newborn Emma in the hospital.

On the back, Ethan had written:

"Dad... if you ever regret your decision... don't come for me.

Come for her.

She deserves at least one grandfather who loves her."

Richard's hands shook violently.

"I came too late for my son..."

He looked at Emma.

"...but maybe not too late for my granddaughter."

Emma quietly stepped behind Claire.

She didn't know this man.

She only knew strangers could break promises too.

Richard slowly knelt.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"I only want one chance..."

"...to earn the right to hear you call me Grandpa."

Before anyone could respond...

Melissa suddenly gasped.

She was staring at her phone.

"Oh my God..."

Everyone turned toward her.

A local news station had already posted videos from the dance.

Millions of people were sharing Emma's story.

But one headline made Claire's blood run cold.

'Hero Soldier's Widow Receives Emotional Surprise—Questions Arise About Military Compensation Fund.'

Someone...

Had started asking where the money raised in Ethan's name had gone.

And one familiar name appeared in every document.

The chairman of the charity.

May you like

Richard Sullivan.

The entire gym fell silent again.
